Outrageously stupid game design right here.
online only mode was a mistake
Thank God I uninstalled gtav a few years ago
Just unplug yourself from online when playing SP, or is this not a possibility? Not that this should be happening in any case..
Soon hackers will be able to kill you IRL
How the fuck is this possible? Surely there must be some sort of security flaw there allowing hackers to get into your PC or something?
They can already. There have been hacking scares for pacemakers for a little bit now.
And in little over a week, we get to repeat the whole damn thing again with Read Dead. You know it's coming. I don't even doubt they'll find a way to add a pricey insta-kill weapon too. They can resurrect Undead Nightmare and call it the "Zombie Death Mark" or something. Preposterous? Sure. Greedy? Without a doubt. But it's more likely to happen than RDR 2 ever getting a single player DLC. The Rockstar playerbase has cast their vote, and it's for some of the worst piece of shit multiplayer on the market.
Unless you crack the game to remove all the online components and communication between the game and Rockstar, "singleplayer" sessions of GTA5 are basically the same as a multiplayer session. The only new thing here is hackers figuring out how to fuck with people in a session without even being in it.
i dont think it actually is, honestly not the same situation for me but when i lost internet for about 3 days i tried to play gta sp the launcher had an offline mode button that just redirects you to an error telling you you're not connected. i couldn't figure out if i was mad or not, honestly.
So there is either no authentication going on with remote messages or they've cracked whatever security there is. Either way, not a good look for Rockstar.
they've managed to turn it into a fucked up DnD session simulator huh
was hoping it was more like an dark souls invasion, not just kill them. But jesus fuck, why would you allow your engine to do that. Unless they were playing SP co-op fully or something?
not really Use the firewall restrict GTA from connecting to the internet
Really?
Here's one instance: https://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/AlertsandNotices/ucm573669.htm
There was a video about one of these on BBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDtr5vixC7E The scary part about this one is that it wasn't fixed for at least 18 months after the vulnerability was reported.

Long story short is the menus that are used just call functions from the base game. Also of note this has actually been possible since day one, the function has been listed forever but only recently the required arguments were found.
lmao and I thought being able to kill an entire server with someone elses name was bad
Yeah some skids found a way to use the functions that are used in a R* Dev menu. They pop in your social club Id and can just fuck with you from wherever as long as you're online. Was fixed yesterday/today though so we gucci.
I can't wait for hackers to find access to the nuclear codes through the R* Social Club.
watch as someone kills you in RD2O from GTA. Not saying it can happen, but well, It's Rockstar
Such a spur of the moment patch requires a ScriptHookV update, though. And I just reinstalled this game after 3 hours of tedium with my physical copy, too. I got a real bad sense of timing.
the biggest thing i'm worried about is possible remote code execution exploits via the game's p2p protocol. i'm sure some of you already knew how the Source Engine had its own fair share of them.
I could always motivate that games like Arma had bad network coding like this, because it was never intended for a big abusive audience to play it. For GTA V however there really aren't many good excuses why some of these hacks are even possible. Sure there are some that are tricky to prevent/detect, but it seems to me that a lot of these could be prevented by just having a properly configured authoritative server. Then again though GTA V has a lot more players and I'm not sure how much Rockstar are already paying for their server bills.
I wouldnt be surprised if this shit happens in the online portion of red dead redemption way to go rockstar
If it'll ever be ported to PC, which, all things considered, might not happen.
I believe they fixed it with either the small 100mb patch the other day or the recent tunables update
