Honestly, freelancing soldiers has been an interesting topic of study for quite a while. The case was made quite convincingly that it could even become a new model army, small infantry units of freelancers coupled with drones, for small engagements.
Since the seventies at the very least in a modern context -- Rhodesia was fought by a large amount of mercenaries. A lot of the African continental wars were fought with white mercs, esp. in South Africa. The use of mercenaries in general to fight wars dates to the middle ages,

Mercenaries like this have existed for a long time. After Vietnam you had Crippled Eagles, among other groups that went to Africa and really gave everyone a good beating there.
The fact of the matter is, special forces talent is worth the money paid for it. Executive Outcomes effectively destroyed the rebel forces of Sierra Leone. Hell, they are credited with bringing an end to the Angolan Civil War.
