• Dr Kerryn Phelps claims by-election victory, Aus govt. loses House majority

Independent candidate Kerryn Phelps has claimed victory in the Wentworth by-election, promising voters she will not let them down. ABC elections analyst Antony Green called the result just over an hour after polling booths closed. Counting so far shows the Liberal Party has suffered a projected swing of more than 20 per cent against candidate Dave Sharma.  The Liberal Party, and its predecessors, have held the eastern Sydney electorate since Federation and the historic result means the Federal Government will lose its one-seat majority in Canberra. With nearly 40 per cent per cent of the votes counted, Mr Sharma had won only 38 per cent of first preferences, while Dr Phelps won 33.  Labor's candidate Tim Murray won 11 per cent. ... Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the result was not unexpected and reflected anger in the electorate following the ousting of Malcolm Turnbull in an August leadership coup. Mr Turnbull resigned as the member for Wentworth following the spill. "The result today is on us, the Liberals, not on Dave Sharma," Mr Morrison said. "The Liberal Party has paid a big price tonight for the events of several months ago. "But as a party, we will continue to rise again." ... Read more at Wentworth by
Shows how unliked the two major parties are, independent got in, thats brilliant.
Fuck yes!
Labor has never been voted in in Wentworth. It's been a liberal seat since 1944. The very same year the Liberal Party was founded. I doubt they'll ever vote for the ALP.
The Liberals still received the most first preferences. Also it’s believed that Labor and Greens voters switched to Dr Phelps, not because they had to vote tactically, but because it would send a stronger message to the federal government if Phelps (as the only other serious contender) received more first preference votes.
So long using this recognized of Jerusalem as Israel capital (despite being controversial topic that shouldn't used as political stunt) to get the same party candidate winning for near century. And congrats for having the first elected Independent Representative for Wentworth division.
The Liberal party's climate change denial stance really played a big part in their abysmal result, it's becoming such a big topic in Aus politics. There's hope yet.
Wait, so you're saying Austrailian citizens actually give a shit about how dangerous climate change denial is, unlike so much of America? Mad props to you all.
Parts of the north east of Australia are going through a massive drought and the Liberals and Nationals just kinda shrug and go "lol oh well" whenever the topic of climate change is brought up. People are getting pretty annoyed about it.
No, its the same. Most of the older generations dont care. When we banned plastic bags they were ranting over TV and in shops at cashiers. Its ironic though because the second you mention clean nuclear power every oldie is terrified of the environment impact it could have.
Well, part of that is because quite a number of left wing and environmentalist groups are STILL banging the anti-nuclear drum worldwide, after over half a century. Another part is that anti-nuclear sentiment has been seeded into popular media (movies, tv, etc) to such a degree that uninformed people routinely assume every nuclear powerplant is one step away from being another cherrnobyl. I mean, seriously, the nuclear powerplant on the verrge of a meltdown (if not actually melting down) is the only depiction that is EVER featured in film. I can't think of a single movie that gives nuclear energy a fair treatment. It's absolutely insane how bad of a shake nuclear has been given since its inception, despite the fact that the actual science could not be clearer on how essential it is to a clean energy future. And the worst part is, we wouldn't be on nearly as tight a deadline with climate change if nuclear power plant construction hadn't been stalled so effectively for the last few decades because of all this bullshit.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/elections/wentworth-by-election-2018/results/ The margin in the count has narrowed. Dave Sharma is at 43.0% while Kerryn Phelps is at 29.3% Still likely to be a victory for Phelps, but Antony Green admitted he may have jumped the gun in declaring the vote last night.
49.4% Liberal 50.6% Independent Fuck, they really did jump the gun. 70% of votes counted, but 1% is still safe for now.
So, what does Kerryn winning mean for the Government?
Minority government and an early election most likely.
Ah, thanks dawg. I fucking hope the libs are out next Election, I am sick and tired of them being in charge.
Why would big business depict alternative energy sources as good?
I would say those that do care definitely give more a shit since Australia's gonna be hit hard by climate change. Most of the population lives by the coast, so rising sea levels are a huge deal, and we already have issues with drought like Whomobile said. There's probably similar amounts of people who think climate change isn't real though.
Nobody gives a shit in the top end of business. Its all PR about "look what we are doing, we are a super progressive company!" It doesnt matter what sector, its all about short term investor returns. You would be kidding yourself if you think a company is going to sacrifice profit for saving the earth.
But the rising sea levels will solve the drought problem more water for everyone yay
If your country was constantly trying to kill you with it's fauna you'd be worried about additional dangers too.
Oh yeah big businesses could not give less of a fuck, they're gonna keep rampantly deforesting the country, stripmining coal and tearing apart natural wonders to see if there's resources hiding underneath until the entire country's dead.
Are we still waiting for mail votes?
