With expectations of a “blue” wave in the congressional mid-terms and good chances Democrats will retake control of the U.S. House, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
has signaled that comprehensive LGBT non-discrimination legislation will be a top priority if she becomes speaker.
Speaking at an event Tuesday at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Pelosi identified the Equality Act as a personal goal in wide-ranging remarks about
her plans for the next Congress.
“It isn’t in our ‘For The People’ agenda because it doesn’t get that specific, but there’s one more because it’s personal for me that I really want to do, and it’s called the Equality Act,”
Pelosi said. “The Equality Act expands ending discrimination against LGBTQ people and women and adding that to the Civil Rights Act.”
Other priorities identified by Pelosi were a campaign finance reform package, expanded background checks for gun purchases and legislation to protect young, undocumented
immigrants known as DREAMers from deportation.
Drew Hammill, a Pelosi spokesperson, told the Washington Blade the Equality Act will be a “top priority” and receive a low bill number from 1 to 10 should they have a majority, which
will designate its importance. As an example of the importance a low bill number has for legislation, House Republicans designated the tax reform bill, the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, as
H.R. 1. It remains the most substantial piece of legislation passed by the 115th Congress.
The office of Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), on the other hand, didn’t respond to multiple requests from the Blade on the timing for the Equality Act should he
replace Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as majority leader.
Introduced by Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) in the House and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) in the Senate, the Equality Act would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Fair Housing Act
to ban anti-LGBT discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, jury service, education, federal programs and credit.
The bill also seeks to update federal law to include sex in the list of protected classes in public accommodation in addition to expanding the definition of public accommodations to
include retail stores, banks, transportation services and health care services. Further, the Equality Act would establish that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act — a 1994 law aimed
at protecting religious liberty — can’t be used to enable anti-LGBT discrimination.
VOTE.
DEMOCRAT.
ASAP.
Not that this isn't a good thing, but do be mindful that Democrats always fall back on social issues and never seem to actually get around to substantive economic policy that the progressive left is calling for. If the House flips blue it's important not to just pat yourself on the back and claim victory, you have to continue to hold their feet to the fire.
Would this be before or after the articles of impeachment?
Of all the possible things to put first, why this?

LGBT folks need some protections and stuff.
you pick the worst hills to die on
But I mean, like any sort of economic reform? Anything?
Because civil rights are important
My concern would be why would people vote for this 'pressing' issue over the multitude of others. Do the democrats want to win?

Lowering health care costs, rebuilding infrastructure and running the House chamber with more transparency and openness are near the top of the Democratic agenda, Pelosi said during a talk Tuesday at
Harvard’s Institute of Politics. Democrats would also prioritize giving legal status to young immigrants, known as Dreamers, and strengthening background checks on gun purchases, she said.
This Okay now, But this isn't enough to fight Republicans (especially in Trump Era) on other issues right now like Medicare, Voting rights and circa are more bigger than just Social ones.
I think global warming and climate change are more important right now.
Not going to get anything done with Trump vetoing things left and right.
Yet the headline that we see and the voters see today, the Democrats putting all their energy into resolving transgender issues with the Equality Act.
He'll probably even veto this.
So human rights is just a non issue to you huh?
Why?
Which is good, these headlines like the one for this thread, won't play well for people who just want some stuff like Healthcare resolved.
wow maybe it's like civil rights are an important issue for quite a few people 🤔
Did you just skip over the rest of my posts in this thread?
It's almost like it actually is a pressing matter for LGBT people. The Trump administration is actively trying to screw over LGBT people. So yes, it's pressing.
So to the average voter who just saw this headline, when is their healthcare situation going to be resolved?
I wonder how it must feel to not have a large group of people and the government constantly trying to make my life miserable because they think I am less then human for how I was born.
Why should I care about the welfare of others when it doesn't affect me personally?
explain that Libs!
Local man doesn't understand the concept of being to stand for multiple things at once, more at 4
nah, obviously refunding person's optional gender transition is more important than people having 100k ER visit bills, not being able to afford medicine for illnesses that if untreated leaves you dead and student debts,

Right, let's just ignore the government actively trying to harm a minority because we can only ever focus on exactly one thing at a time, no more and no less.
idk, maybe because the current administration is in the process of dehumanizing a significant group of people?
just an idea
