12 years is a long time, but I agree it's awfully short for someone who intentionally tried to kill people.
Personally I wouldn't ever feel 100% safe releasing him from prison, considering his mental state and age (both of which will change over 12 years of course, but still) and the initial crime he committed.
I feel like if he isn't fixed by the time his sentence is up, then they could always just continue the sentence.
That's pretty long to be honest.
Ideally a life-sentence would be equal to how many years you took from the person you killed, on average, so no, 6-12 years is almost a joke in comparison.
If anything prisoners should be able to get parole within 6-12 years, but they need to earn that.
If you aren't in prison forever, it shouldn't realistically be called a life sentence. A jail sentence should only be called a life sentence if it implies you'll be imprisoned for the rest of your life.
Yeah, 12 years is long but not long enough for this scumbag.
people only really have an idea of what is or isn't too long based on relative proportion to common sentences in their own country, and then on top of that, people always tend to demand harsher and harsher sentences than would be expected even in their own country. Sentences should be arrived at based on an objective evaluation for reoffending rate plus an individual risk judgement call after a certain number of years to reduce damage to society and nothing more. If 1 year was enough to reduce a reoffending chance of even a heinous crime to zero that'd be enough. Wwhenever i see this "what a scumbag give him more years" it just feels so pointlessly counterproductive.
So if you kill a newborn, you get 1-2 mins jailtime?
Pretty sure hes implying the inverse of that
It's pretty damn long in Europe compared to your silly 300 year sentences across the pond.
Straight up killing someone gets you only 2−14 years here in Finland, depending on the severity of the case (whether it was an accident, a drunk stabbing, or premeditated planned murder).
"just" 12
What, do you want the stupid multi hundred year sentences we get in the US or something?
Germany has a prison rehabilitation system. It's not a mess like the US where it's all about enriching the prison owners and encouraging a revenge culture.
10+ years is the highest sentence possible anyways. German prisons are used to rehabilitate and not just to lock people away to rot.
And what if I say it shouldn't?
Hell, realistically we shouldn't give anyone any specific length of time in jail. If you wanna get serious and be rational anyway.
Instead, we should keep people locked until they can convince some authority that it's safe to let them out again - with supporting (or conflicting) statements and evidence from the facility's security, staff and/or others workers like psychiatrists and whoever, plus taking into consideration the initial crime for which the person got sentenced in the first place. Based on all that, a decision can be made whether someone can be released or try again later.
How would you estimate how long the baby would live, then? Do you only get 30 months if it was going to die of SIDS anyway?
My point with this terrible argument is that it's a bad idea to have a revenge-based system.
Yes
