CBS All Access has set phasers to funny with the announcement today that they’ve given a two-season commitment to Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated comedy from Emmy Award-winner Mike McMahan. The show, which will be produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, will follow the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least-important ships. CBS Eye Animation Productions is CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm.
Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin of Secret Hideout and Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz of Roddenberry Entertainment will serve as executive producers alongside McMahan, who is best known for Rick and Morty and has written the upcoming Harry Mudd-centric installment of Star Trek: Short Treks. Aaron Baiers, who brought McMahan to the project, will serve as a co-executive producer.
"Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said. “His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed. He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trekepisode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of Trek to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”
Ah, I want to see RLM's reaction to this announcement.
Other than that I don't really think anyone really wants this but hey, another sci-fi comedy show woo.
They really should have just co-opted Seth MacFarlane for this
Seth MacFarlane and comedy mix like lead particles and drinking water
Could be okay, but I feel like it’ll be another generic “raunchy” cartoon; I.e have a few very stupid characters, one smart character, a walking liberal parody to try and balance out all their anti-conservative humor, and of course, some sort of talking animal (who does drugs and likes sex haha so cooky) because family guy did it so why the fuck not.
I'm assuming you haven't seen or heard of The Orville, which is basically this but live action.
I've found it to be hilarious and completely atypical of anything else he's produced.

MacFarlane could be a great comedy writer. He's the kind to throw out a joke just to see if it's a hit or miss. His problem is that he doesn't seem to pay attention to what hits and what misses, which makes him inconsistent. He's capable of writing comedy gold, but due to his unfiltered nature (and being surrounded by yes-men), the bulk of his work is cheap humour.
He's like the Lil Wayne of situational comedy: most of his work is subpar, a lot of it is average, and some of it is gold.
It says "As we broaden the world of Trek to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”
I don't think they're aiming for an adult audience here.
MacFarlane has a genuine love for Star Trek and it shows in the Orville, you can just ignore the humor in the show and it's Star Trek, the DNA is there.
I think his issue with comedy stems from what must be an absolutely brutal schedule to keep 2 animated shows producing 20ish episodes every 9 months for the last 13 years all while working on other projects that further his own career and interests.
So, we're getting an Animated version of Galaxy Quest?
Orville was incredible, I'll take as much Star Trek comedies as I can please
My mistake, didn't get to read it thoroughly because I was at work. Still, we'll see.
Deadline has reported that it's an adult show, but Deadline isn't exactly a reliable source these days. No other articles mention it being adult.
The Orville is actually really good and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a TNG fan, I watch it more for the sci-fi aspect (which they completely nail) over the comedy
i like how this "funny moments" video is like 3 clips and none of them are funny
The Orville is actually really good. It's more Star Trek than Discovery (Though if you, like most people, quit half way or before half way into Discovery, it really got decent, but it's still not very Star Trek) I could see an animated comedy Star Trek show working
TBH even Zardoz is more Star Trek than Discovery
