Former McCain adviser Steve Schmidt on Wednesday blamed President Trump's rhetoric for the explosives sent to prominent Democrats this week, saying the president has "stoked
a cold civil war" in the U.S.
Schmidt's comments come as suspicious packages containing explosives were sent to Democratic figures including the Clintons, the Obamas, mega-donor George Soros, Rep. Maxine
Waters (D-Calif.), former Attorney General Eric Holder and former CIA Director John Brennan as well as sent to CNN headquarters in New York.
Each of these targets have been publicly mocked and antagonized by the president.
"Trump has stoked a cold civil war in this Country," Schmidt, an MSNBC contributor who has renounced the GOP, wrote on Twitter. "His rallies brim with menace and he has labeled
journalists as enemies of the people. That someone would seek to kill their political enemies is not aberrational but rather the inevitable consequence of Trumps incitement."
Trump on Thursday morning tweeted that "mainstream media" is to blame for the "anger we see today in our society." "The targets are political, not coincidental," Schmidt wrote. "It
looks like someone finally took Trump both literally and seriously."
As of Thursday morning, authorities had intercepted nine packages bearing similar characteristics. The FBI has launched an investigation into who is behind the attacks. None of the
explosives, described as crude pipe bombs, detonated before authorities found them.
Democrats immediately began to tie the attacks to incendiary GOP rhetoric, which has sometimes positioned the targeted figures as evil or immoral. When Trump on Wednesday
afternoon called for national unity following the attacks, top Democratic leaders called his message "hollow." "Time and time again, the President has condoned physical violence and
divided Americans with his words and his actions,"
Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a joint statement. "President Trump's words ring hollow until he reverses his
statements that condone acts of violence."
Republicans have hit back that both sides are to blame for the country's aggravated political divisions.

Yeah you know those radical Democrats with their vitriolic opinions and rampant witchhunting and smear campaigns and calls for violence
Thats probably the best way to describe America's Situation.
Just this still and brooding stand off thats being fueled by the growing Radicalization of the GOP.
I honestly believe these mail bombs are only the beginning of worse to come, but I'm praying that maybe, just maybe, the Democrats can sweep Congress and change the course of the country. Though I imagine it would create a lot of strife on the way to that. If there are pipe bombs being mailed out now, what will Trump supporters do if he were impeached?
there certainly has been a stockpiling of powder, the mail bombs have thankfully all been duds so far but if cnn had been blown up and dozens of people hurt or killed, and fox with the president were still out there saying the lying media deserved this, ya we'd have people in the streets.
If Democrats can sweep Congress it might help with laws, but so long as the president is spouting lies that a large cult following listens to, I don't know how this "cold civil war" can be stopped.
Without an abundantly clear outside force (Japan bombing pearl harbor, Russia during the cold war) how can America unite? I really don't know.
Maybe a natural disaster on a national scale of some kind.
Though that's just as bad as war.
It sucks that it takes national suffering in order for national unity.
Won't be cold much longer if things continue at this pace, so much is sure.
Republicans have hit back that both sides are to blame for the country's aggravated political divisions.
BS. Democrats are only to blame for America's political division so far as that a Democrat held the presidency for eight years and as a result a bunch of backwards-minded yee-haws went crazy over having a "filthy negro" for their president. We're only to blame in the sense that we pissed off a bunch of assholes by not electing another geriatric rich white guy.

"yeah we're bad but have you seen the democrats!"
sure the democrats aren't that great and are utterly useless at times, but they arent trying to lock children in cages and encourage violence against journalists and non whites
the mental gymnastics that people in this country are capable of is absolutely fucking astounding sometimes.
america never united against the Soviet union, our politicians had someone to rally against but the divisive politics of today were there in the 70s and 80s
Man Trump looks like absolute shit
Eating nothing but cheeseburgers, KFC, and pizza for decades, while refusing to exercise because you're dumb enough to think it's unhealthy too, really takes a toll on you. And that's without even considering all the reports that Trump has been in a depressed funk for most of his term, cause he didn't realize how fucking hard it was to actually run a country.
First I've heard of these reports and to be honest I wouldn't even consider sympathy for the man because he hasn't done a single productive thing for this shithole. I can't even go "HMMM SUCKS TO HAVE TO WORK DOESN'T IT" because that would be admitting he's trying at all, when instead he's just reaping in the attention.
Yeah. Also, according to the reports, which I swear started as early as six months into his first year, his depression tends to make him just go and watch a bunch of Fox News to reassure himself that he's doing a good job. So he's definitely not depressed because he has any self-awareness whatsoever.
Nobody told widdle Donald that he'd actually have to work, he thought it'd be like his cushy CEO life where he's surrounded by sycophants who're paid to do what he says and he's accountable to no one except the mobsters he owes money to. Which explains why he shitroasted Obama as being lazy, for all his faults ol' Barry made it look easy, at least whenever Trump was paying attention and not mindlessly shouting about birth certificates.
Trump never wanted the job of President. He just wanted the fame and attention that Presidents get. He really would be happier if he was a monarchical figurehead sitting over a dictatorship that did all the work for him -- because that's a private corporation structure he's familiar with.
I know what you mean about Obama, but just look at the poor man. And he was in tip top shape at the beginning of his presidency, unlike his Orangeness:

I woudn't be 100 percent surprised if Trump actually fucking dies during his presidency, if he somehow manages to get a second term.
yeah, but obama actually worked and didn't let his mind stagnate in an echochamber -- he was stressed because he was actually trying. I bet trump will look exactly the same because all he's doing is sitting in comfy chairs watching echochambers, playing golf, and spewing cut-and-paste vitriol rather than informing himself, writing speeches, and making compromise.
The GOP isn't even a conservative party anymore it's just a fucking far-right one.
For what it's worth Trump started his presidency as an old man and will end it (God forbid in another 6 years) as an even older man. His age is already visible, being a fat dude with a fake tan can't hide that.
trump is absolutely on something like aderol
Just evil, more like
There's no rhyme or reason to it beyond "all mine and fuck you"
He's not going to die in office unless he's killed by someone. Out of 645 days in office, he's spent 210 at his own properties and 159 days at golf courses
I'm calling it now: his lawyers will apply this exact logic to try and get justification for a third (second) term
Better dead than red has mutated from communism to the gop.
Sorry buddy, you were right.
I really didn't want to be.
There are different times of conservativism. Socially and culturally the GOP is still conservative, but "reactionary" would probably be more accurate. Fiscally and philosophically though they are no more conservative than the Democrats are. Federal power waxes and wanes when it is convenient to them, states rights only counts when its rights they like, and they are ballooning the deficit with tax cuts for the wealthy while increasing spending.
By change the course of the country you mean accelerate an internal conflict right?
If that's what it takes, so be it.
