They found debris and no survivors so far and I do not think they will find any. ADS-B data shows that it basically fell out of the sky with it falling at over 30,000 feet per minute right before data was lost (at ~425 feet above sea level). There is a spike right before the fall too so it looks like the plane went into a stall and the pilots never recovered. Flightradar24 Data Regarding Lion Air Flight JT610 – Flightradar..
It was a brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8. The company only took delivery of it in August. I wonder what could've gone wrong. Mr Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group, told reporters the aircraft had a technical problem on a flight from the resort island of Bali to Jakarta but it had been "resolved according to procedure". Mr Sirait declined to specify the nature of the issue but said none of its other aircraft of that model had the same problem. Lion had operated 11 Boeing 737 Max 8s and it had no plan to ground the rest of them, he said.
looks like it's similar to the air france flight where the pilots weren't capable of responding to a stall anymore.
The one over the South Atlantic a few years ago? That was because the pitot tube (used to determine airspeed) froze over, so the autopilot had no way to determine throttle. This left the pilots to do it by hand. But with no way to tell how fast they were going, any increase could've meant overspeed.
I know airplanes are one of safest methods of transport, but I feel so uneasy about getting into a plane when I read news like that.
The idea of being stuck in a metal tube for like 10+ hours where you're absolutely fucked if something goes wrong is what's doing it for me
just gotta think how many flights go by absolutely fine compared to how many go wrong. I don't quite get behind the car vs plane analogy because you're way more fucked in a plane crash but you really are statistically safer in a plane than any other form of transport. You're probably way more likely to get hit just crossing the road.
It's the sense that if anything goes wrong there's absolutely nothing you can do about it and it's not your fault whatsoever. Even superhuman reflexes can't always save you in a car crash, but you're literally hopeless to do anything in the event something goes wrong on a plane.
To build on this.. Who do you trust flying the plane, for that matter of course how do you trust that they know what to do in case of an emergency? What if the engine breaks down or crumbles in some cases, you can't go out there and fix it. What if there's a fire in the plane that you cannot reach, there wouldn't be much in the way for recourse. What if someone is hijacking the plane, I know the idea these days is almost uncommon these days but the struggle to regain control would be an uphill battle that will hurt many passengers. It's this sense of not being able to control the variables of the situation that can make planes scary. Sure that can be still said about cars and walking on the side walk but, at least when you're driving or walking you have some sense of control. If you see a car coming and you want to cross the street, wait for the car to stop or finish its course. Someone about to crash into you, evade it. It's not so much with a plane, where you're a glorified audience member to powers out of your control.
There must be nothing more terrifying than being inside an airplane as it plummets to the ground surrounded by screaming faces
Eh when the plane is going down I think I'll just sing always look on the bright side of life as loud as I can and hope the black box picks it up
ah no you’re right. I was thinking of a different airbus crash. A300 that went down after the FO used crazy rudder inputs
