Well, throw it on the pile, I guess
We got played like fools by Russia.
So it wouldn't be out of the ballpark that Trump developed a friendship with one of these agents?
Soviet spies oh shit did we time travel?
they were going to find those useful idiots someday they just had to wait for the reagan revolution.
It's literally the first sentence of the article: "Soviet-aligned intelligence agents targeted Donald Trump in the late 1980s in an effort to obtain critical information about the U.S. government"
played us like a damn fiddle
The politicians never went away, the communism of the day was no longer an effective ideological model to control people. The worst tragedy of the collapse was that the very worst characteristics of communism are safely retained in a model that doesn't even pretend to provide for it's citizens. I feel like the capitalism that is being displayed in China, Russia, USA etc. has no legitimate goals other than some very nihilistic sentiments about people and individuality, the ideology that is used to justify it is nothing more than spin to distract people from recognizing that there is no other genuine relationship between them and these current governments than one that does not provide any legitimate function other than to preserve things as they are. Predatory states don't just magically vanish because the tools have changed, so likewise it's own imperial interests don't just disappear either, especially when it's mode of distribution inherently lets few get more than everyone else.
Interesting note, the spies were Czechoslovakian, not Soviet. In theory, given that both the Czechs and Slovaks are allies to the US, it should be possible to get some info on what they were gathering and why, which might help counterintelligence operations. Of course, accepting this to be true would also be admitting Russian interference is possible, so that won't happen.
At the time in question, Czechosolvakia (as it existed then) was in fact part of the Soviet Union, so the spies were in fact Soviet, as all the 'Independent' agencies in the other countries were simply arms of the greater Soviet Intelligence community. This is pre-Velvet Revolution, after all.
Czechoslovakia was not a part of Soviet Union. The citizens of Czechoslovak Socialist Republic were not the citizens of Soviet Union. Czechoslovakia was an independent, but not sovereign republic, and part of Warsaw Pact. Please double check your "facts".
Members of the Warsaw Pact were considered Soviet Satellite states, my dude.
Which is not the same as being part of the Soviet Union. You now just said what I said in my comment. An independent, but not sovereign, meaning a satelite. They were not in the borders of Soviet Union, as you stated. Czechoslovakians were not Soviets. Remember that some countries take offence to being called a Soviet state/republic, when they weren't. Also another incorrect statement, though irrelevant to discussion and really just cherry-picking: Albania was part of the Warsaw Pact, but not under indirect control of the USSR.
Whether they take offence or not, they were Soviet satellite states and under de fact Soviet control. Yes, you're correct that I used "Soviet Union" incorrectly and have edited that to "Under Soviet control." Because they were. Albania is indeed cherry picking, considering it withdrew in 1968 due to Operation Danube, an incident which, incidentally, cemented Czechosolvakia as a puppet state of the Soviet Union.
Good to hear we agree here and that the confusion was resolved. I'm sorry if I had come rather agressive in my comment, that was not my intention.
Was the Moscow pee tape part of their plan all along????
operation pee pee poo poo ! Holy crap, this guy has ties to the Ruskis going back decades and people STILL insist he's above suspicion
