Interviewed on Evan Davis's last Newsnight as presenter (you can watch the whole programme here), Mr Osborne said: "We were wrong to play into the debate that everything that Brussels did was a challenge and a battle and was wrong."
He added the debate over immigration had proved "pretty lethal" to the result of the June 2016 referendum.
Mr Osborne said the government had been promising targets on immigration "that we couldn't deliver and that then led to a debate about how you might deliver those targets... we definitely contributed to that argument, didn't make enough of the value of immigration".
Tourist info: George Osborne was Chancellor (in charge of government spending) 2010-16 under David Cameron, he supported remaining in the EU but now admits they actually fucked up and fueled the fire
the guy who's economic policies only lead to massive poverty and attacks on the poor is concerned that they might have radicalized a bunch of the country against the eu as a distraction. The deeply sad part is all the suffering he caused was for nothing as the deficit will absolutely spike under brexir and the debt of britain never actually decreased under his austarity policies
I hate how open he is about having no ideals, and how used to that we are. He doesn't care that his mistakes may have irreparably damaged many people's lives, it's that his mistakes have lead to some of his mates losing their political favourability.
Its still happening though. Fuck you all c:
What is this and why does it look like one of those cheap "hidden" cameras.

It's a poppy, worn for remembrance of those fallen in both World Wars and members of the armed services as a whole from September to the early weeks of December.
Pretty much a requirement for appearing on TV around this time of year unless you wanna be called a cunt
Cool so can we call this off now?
Yeah appearing on TV without wearing one will get you on the front page of most newspapers with "THIS PERSON HATES THE TROOPS"
Even as a pacifist I'm a vehement supporter of the poppy and wearing it because it honors the sacrifice of men, not the actions of a state.
Reminds me of the lyrics of In Flander's Field, is it related? Interesting tradition, never head of it. We have a days of rememberance and monuments to the fallen of world wars in every cities, but nothing like that here.
Wearing a poppy is a WW1 memorial tradition from the very same symbolism that inspired In Flanders Fields, and it later expanded to cover rememberance of both WW1 and WW2, as well as Korea, Vietnam, and other major 20th century wars depending on the country.
At least Canada does it as well, I'm not sure about other Commonwealth nations however
In another life George Osborne woulda been a great niche actor - his niche being an unlikable Roman patrician
What are you on about? He just oozes natural charisma.

I'm Canadian. Our war memorials and Cenotaphs are WW1 memorials that have since encompassed remembrance of the fallen in every war and military mission the Canadian military participated in.
@Haaxxx I'm legitimately curious what about my post regarding wearing poppies and remembering the fallen in every war since WW1 is funny. I'm not upset over ratings, but I'm genuinely wondering why funny on that post.
I don't know about where you live, but where I live poppy sales support the Royal Canadian Legion, a non-profit veterans' organization. My high school history classes included covering WW1 and the poppies of Flanders, so the poppy being around Rememberance Day flows into line. Then again, I also was an Air Cadet and participated in Rememberance Day ceremonies for years.
The general public is ignorant and follows trends without knowing why, this isn't anything new. Go out around Christmastime and ask people to explain the origins of the traditions of Christmas. You'll probably get "umm something about Jesus".
Of course they have no importance outside this time of year, the whole point is to commemorate Remembrance Day on 11th November
