India has unveiled the world's tallest statue, which cost 29.9bn rupees (£330m; $430m) to build.
The structure is a bronze-clad tribute to independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
But it won't remain the world's tallest statue for long. The government in the western state of Maharashtra is constructing a memorial to the Maratha warrior king Shivaji that is estimated to be 190m tall.
What went into making the world's tallest statue?
The Statue of Unity weighs about 67,000 tonnes and has been built to withstand major earthquakes as well as heavy winds
Around 12,000 bronze panels were used in the exterior, weighing almost 1,850 tonnes
The monument and its surroundings occupy more than 20,000 sq metres, encompassed by a 12 sq km artificial lake
More than 2,000 workers along with several hundred labourers from China contributed to the efforts
Looks badass, and if it helps generate tourism revenue then why not
I guess that's another way to look at it
Kinda boring statue, it's just standing there looking depressed.

Not twice. It's 4x taller.
I'm reminded of a giant Bender statue shooting fire from it's mouth while yelling "Remember me!"

I went out from the picture in the article, here it states its about half the size.
Maybe its just me, but why are people rating winner? I'll be pissed but somewhat less pissed if its a country with a better economy/less social class divide, but India has a hugeee divide in terms of social classes, and this is a massive waste of money and big ego boost
They slso usedthe foreign aid theu recieved previously to build up their navy and space program.
What an overwhelmingly uninspired statue. He looks like he just missed the bus.
I personally find it a refreshing change from the usual gawdy romanticized forms you typically see in statues.
I like the realism but it's pretty boring tbh that he's just kind of standing awkwardly.
The various huge Buddha statues are cooler

They also didn't include the base of the statue of Unity.
Which statue would win in a fight though
Russia's. It's got a sword dude, even if anything is taller it can just become a giant thumbtack and destroy the others feet.
Not very iconic as others here have pointed out. Just looks like some random dude.
Lady Liberty however is unique and I'm pretty sure most people in the world would easily recognize her.
I'm sure that money would have been better spent towards supporting the local farming communities instead of stroking some political ego. At this point I think nations should just cut off aid to India given how content it is to piss it away in this and has proven capable of funding its own space program.
Coulda bought every ship breaker in India a pair of boots, gloves, and torch goggles... but instead they built a statue.
whats the point of a statue if its not interesting to look at?
Looks like it's missing a cigarette in it's mouth.
Or inspiring, I mean, it's called the statue of Unity but what about an old man hunched over screams unity?
It's uniting people to mock it
Yea, probably could have been a nicer statue. Guess they just wanted to go for size over anything else.
That being said, I hope someone mods it into a Just Cause game so I can pull it down, that'd be fun!
I wonder how many people died building it.
A country like India I imagine doesn't have very good labor laws for the little man given their social/economic divide.
Hope someone knocks the cunt down.
Finally, some encouragement for the government to make the Statue of Liberty 2 (Patent Pending)
What'd that statue ever do to you?
waiting for a Reinhard Heydrich statue to truly bask in the glory of Gold
I've brought up something of a similar line before, regarding the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan by the Taliban in 2003. Many simply, and still do write this off as fundamentalist iconoclasm, and one could easily think that the case; but Mullah Omar, the one who gave the orders, had this to say:
"I did not want to destroy the Bamiyan Buddha. In fact, some foreigners came to me and said they would like to conduct the repair work of the Bamiyan Buddha that had been slightly damaged due to rains. This shocked me. I thought, these callous people have no regard for thousands of living human beings – the Afghans who are dying of hunger, but they are so concerned about non-living objects like the Buddha. This was extremely deplorable. That is why I ordered its destruction. Had they come for humanitarian work, I would have never ordered the Buddha's destruction."

Of course, the Buddhas were already built hundreds of years ago, so it's bordering on apples and oranges. Ultimately, I think the destruction to be short-sighted, as I imagines the Buddhas were quite the draw. Regardless, there's definitely debate to be had about this sort of thing. Is it appropriate to commit such resources to glorifying your nation, when these resources could instead be diverted to aid in alleviating poverty and suffering?
Poverty relief is good, yes; making sure that people are fed, clothed, adequately housed, and treated for illness should be of importance to any state. Still, simply relieving poverty offers no long term solution; it is granting people a living, and in turn dignity that must be done.
On the flip side, it is fair to ask what this construction will bring with it? Will it become a draw in the tourist industry? Will people be put to work in the construction, but also maintenance and stewardship of the statue? I think the answer lies in these questions.
Amazing, it looks like shit.
This administration loves to spend money on shit that we don't need instead of spending it on amenities and infrastructure that are horribly underfunded.
