Minor near-end gameplay/detail spoiler If you go back to the first set of enemies in the Dark World once Susie joins the party for reals, the compliment ACT she does to them is regarding how they came all the way back just for them

Uh not really sure what you're saying here lol. He said he's at 0% completion for the REST of the game. The demo is the first chapter of the game, and also has music and sprite work and tons of stuff that'll obviously carry over to the rest of the game, so ofc it's not 0% overall. He was being hyperbolic anyways since he has done some music and the writing.
can we talk about how kris is totally doing a jojo with his dramatic posing https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/224422/fda8c9b6-53d6-4a9f-9fb4-c35efcc94f7f/tumblr_inline_phlrr4FW3g1w2r8yu_75sq.gif
I haven't posted yet but I definitely love Deltarune. There's so much fan art though, I can't keep up. Should I change my background?
So I have thoughts. Am I alone in feeling majorly creeped out not just by the shock ending, but by basically everything about Delta Rune? I had this impression of the entire demo trying to sort of lull me into a false sense of security. Like the way all the old characters showed up in an intentionally "hey look it's your old buddies!" way, but when looking deeper you realize they're actually somewhat alien to you, not the same ones you know, and lacking all of the hard-won relationships and character developments that made them meaningful to you. The way it constantly denies Undertale's themes of choices and consequences and hardship in favor of the opposite ("character creation" is discarded, fighting vs. sparing is meaningless, your actions to Ralsei and Susie don't change their relationship to you, Susie and other characters asking you questions and interrupting your answers, even choosing the parts of the thrashing machine). The way the game's framing, with creepy Gaster(?) narration and ominous extra-diegetic stuff, is at odds with its actually very light and carefree tone (it's impossible to face or cause serious suffering.) It's somehow genuinely sweet and affecting but simultaneously... "unearned," like I was being patronized. It felt like the game was toying with me. An insincere smile. "Wow, aren't you happy? Isn't it great to be back? Can you believe it?" I spent the entire time with an intense, growing sense of distrust. It was amazing.

He's got a big glock.
Game design  / muse: Toby, outside of being absolutely genius when it comes to writing lovable characters, seems to be very adept at designing around player behaviors. I listened to Firewatch's postmortem narrative design talk and there's a mention in rewarding unexpected behaviors outside of feedback loops and core engagement. Recognizing player actions outside of the expected loop gives games a "human touch" implying the inhabitants of the virtual world aren't just mindless tokens waiting for mechanical inputs. It makes games feel alive and special when encountered. Now I can understand why many games don't do this: it requires a lot of observation and thought that comes AFTER game testing, and they are content that will probably be missed by many. On top of that, many developers are controlling: players are EXPECTED to do this/these and we do not tolerate them doing otherwise that would DETRACT from our CAREFULLY crafted game flow. Designers have to care for players who care for the world and characters, which is a rather difficult habit to break given that players are often treated as mere 'interactive' audiences, or worse, people that push numbers. In addition, more and more developers are leaning toward pseudo-generated content that pads gameplay hours, favoring more mechanical aspect of things. The takeaway is, Toby is a chill, loving dude who's pretty lax on how players experience his games, and rewards those who care beyond mechanical gameplay elements. However, that makes his games 'expensive' to produce and I assume that takes a toll on him. Thankfully his games aren't systemic otherwise it would probably drive him insane workload-wise. Ye I had that feeling during the starting moments but then after the adventure I was completely allured I forgot about the whole sense of falsehood. Wouldn't be surprised if that dog pull a fast one on us.
Personally, I think it's pretty clear what the setting of Deltarune is: it's the original timeline that was alluded to in Sans' secret basement and all the Gaster content from Undertale. It's already been heavily hinted at that Sans and Gaster were both scientists working on some sort of time machine. Undertale is the timeline after whatever accident occurred that got Gaster stuck outside of time while Sans is secretly filled with regret. Deltarune will be about the lead-up to that incident in the happier original world, with Gaster recounting it to you, the player, as the framing device. This is why he's the one narrating and the whole theme of "your choices don't matter": this all already happened, and Deltarune is just a game-long playable flashback and so the events that lead into the Undertale timeline are unavoidable. Chara will also factor into this whole incident in some way what with possessing Kris - "Chara" being merely that other malevolent SOUL that came from who knows where, fighting with yours for control. Due to this struggle, Kris is split into two separate people when the timeline reboots: the malevolent SOUL gets a younger version of Kris's body to become Chara as known in Undertale, while you - Kris's actual SOUL - goes on to be that of Frisk, a child who also resembles Kris but moreso when in the dark world.
