https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWKn6yKuXGE With the recent re-release of Alan Wake on digital storefronts coinciding with the me working on this video for the better half of a month, I feel as though I have something of value to share, albeit primarily for those who've played the game at least once before or interested in the writing and ideas behind it. I'm currently in the middle of combing over every game in Remedy's catalog in an attempt to better understand each game they've released (save for Death Rally, a masterpiece beyond my comprehension). After putting my thoughts to paper and getting a different perspective from Noah Gervais' video on the game, I think I've got something that may well be worth your time. Part of what I've noticed with every game from Max Payne to Quantum Break is that these games seem to toy with determinism in one way or another. With Max Payne it's about how the protagonist is bound by genre convention to have his story written out before he's even lived through it. With Alan Wake it's much more literal given the pages, and hence goes a step further in dealing with the clash between light and dark, artist versus publisher, and so on. Quantum Break yet again plays with determinism by way of causal loops in time-travel. I go into much more detail in the video though, somewhere in the neighborhood of ~4800 words; personally I'm just excited to have a discussion with even one more person who feels strongly about this game.
