A Conservative MP has called on the government to reintroduce hanging for people who commit violent crimes.
John Hayes, MP for South Holland and the Deepings, and a former minister, asked justice secretary David Gauke to consider the “potential merits” of the death penalty.
That's right. Not just bringing back the death penalty, but the barbaric practice of hanging. WTF.
after experiencing the gyration of this article i want them to bring it back just so they can use it on me
Only if he tries it first.
Neat, can we hang half the MPs in his party that have driven the abhorrent reductions and general castration of this nation's welfare and public services?
If you're gonna be killing people to punish them for crimes, it should be painless (i.e. not hanging). And if it's pain you want to inflict, then it's a slippery slope towards approving straight up torture for no tangible benefit.
How about you use it on yourself you wonky faced cunt, we abolished it for a reason and it should never come back.
To The Gallows!
Just incase people don't bother diving into the article and start spreading this shit around.
>Responding, justice minister Edward Argar said the government “opposes the use of the death penalty in all circumstances and has no plans to reintroduce it”.
Pointing out that the UK is campaigning for the abolition of the death penalty globally, he said: “There is no evidence that capital punishment acts as a deterrent to violent crime. Furthermore, the reintroduction of the death penalty would bring with it the very real risk that some innocent people would die.”
Why stop there when there's drawn & quartering and crucifixion too?
Tories should be careful what they wish for lmao
Oh yeah, there's no chance of it happening, but it's still ridiculous.
Holy shit get the popcorn this is gonna be a good one...
Yeah I think it's safe to say he's gonna lose his job somehow over this, I can't imagine his constituents are gonna be very impressed.
Since when has that been an issue for the tories?
They seem perfectly content to let people die after taking their benefits away for bullshit reasons.
How about we just abolish the death penalty instead. Or, if people still insist we keep it, just build an oxegen deprivation chamber or use helium or something. There are options available to us right now that are much more humane than lethal injection, and yet we still insist on manufacturing expensive drugs that have a serious chance of backfiring and causing agonizing pain.
It's already abolished in the UK.
fucking hell can people stop trying to make the world a worse place already? populism is fucking awful and they only propose worse and worse things and yet to some people they think "Yes I like this idea, lets do thar thing that makes other things more awful!"
I agree on right-wing populism, but Bernie Sanders is a populist and I agree with him on a lot of stuff. Populism isn't inherently bad, is all I'm saying.
no its not but its usually couched as concern for the ordinary people at the expense of some other group of people who very likely are unrelated to the problem or have very little power. Bernie does go a little hard on the rich vs poor mentality even though he's right on a lot of it, but it makes his message harder to get across because he comes off as just wanting to hurt the rich sometimes.
As vile as this sounds, he is actually sadly appealing to over half the Tory base.

Its not just the Tory base
The amount of people who would easily sign a "Bring back the death penalty...... FOR CHILD SEX PERVERTS AND TERRORISTS AND PEOPLE WHO KICK DOGS!!!!" sheet in Britain would be staggering
its pretty much on par with "but think of the children" and naming bills the opposite of their effect like FREEDOM for domestic survallence bills
What the hell, that makes it even worse. So he not only wants to bring the death penalty back, but he jumped right straight to "lets fucking hang people again." I get the feeling he's one of those people who is under the delusion that you make crime go down by making criminals suffer. If that was the case (it's not), why not just bring fucking drawn-and-quartering back while we're at it?
but deterance always works for conservatives
The US semi abolished it for four years between 1972 and 1976 by the Supreme Court.
yeah bingo
Sadly an effect that effects all voter bases
To the people saying hanging is "barbaric," when done correctly it's actually an instantaneous death. It's the only method of execution still used in Japan, and was the last method of execution used in Canada before its abolition in the '70s. Frankly, white it may seem morbid since the body is hanging there by a rope, it's likely much less painful than some of the odd medleys of lethal injection drugs being used in the US nowadays.
and then successive conservative scotus's have refused to rule on a whole host of challenges to it
Was going to say this. By the standards of execution methods, hanging is downright civilised. I'd take it over most US execution methods.
Hanging and oxygen deprivation would be far more humane, but they probably seem "icky" due to their pasts, so we use these extremely expensive methods that "seem" more humane. Or something.
