God he really drags out his words, sheesh. Either way, it was a neat look at the franchise, didn't think there was THAT many HOTD2 spin-offs, christ. I myself used to play the ever-living shit out of HOTD3 when I got it on the xbox, and in turn HOTD2 cause it came with it. Shame really, I really enjoyed the HOTD series but seeing as arcades are disappearing real fast over here in Europe (at least over in Swedeland), it's hard to ever get the arcade experience, even more so cause even if you find some place that has an arcade section, very rarely do they actually have any of the fun arcades, it's just ridge racer machines and maybe an SNK machine in the back. I only got to experience HOTD4 once and that was in Florida, hah.
He and Guru Larry speaks so similarly with the way they drag out their words that I never realized at first Larry had a guest star whenever SGR was covering something on his channel What caught me by surprise was that Typing of the Dead actually began on the arcade first, never thought to see a typing game in an arcade. I actually got to play HOTD on the arcades since they were big here at the time, and home consoles were actually the more expensive option during the 90s and early 2000s here. Got pretty excited when I discovered they made a PC port of the first 3 games. Not the best of ports but it was nice playing without having to spend quarters at the arcades, and probably the only time I actually managed to beat them. Plus the unlockables the home versions had were insane, I remember there's secret stuff like being able to play as other characters, which was funny seeing in cutscenes. Arcades are still relatively alive here, but sadly have also been downsizing over the years in favor of VR-games for 5 minutes and internet cafes being a more popular site for gaming. A lot of the machines here are starting to be poorly maintained. There's still working machines for HOTD 2, 3, 4 and even some Time Crisis games here, but the guns either have unresponsive triggers or aim calibration being way off which makes them harder to enjoy now. I was able to play the HOTD 4 Special too mentioned in the video some years ago and I wish I knew how rare it actually was, since I only got to play it once at the time and I can't find it anymore on the arcade I played on. The games are always charming and fun, but the arcade experience is definitely the best way to go. The experience of pumping the shotgun in HOTD 3 and using the vibrating uzi for HOTD 4 was a real blast and really made the game more enjoyable. Really wish arcades were more accessible around the world and hopefully have a bit of a resurgence someday.
See what's really a kicker for me is I actually had the opportunity to play HOTD4 Special. It was at this big bar/bowling/pool place that had an arcade section, and when it was recently renovated, they downsized the arcade to a ice hockey table and a punch bag machine lol. When I first saw it, I wanted to try it out but it was almost closing hours and my friends wanted to peace out, so I was like eh maybe some other time. My luck, I guess. And god you are absolutely right about VR game rentals taking over instead, and even then it's some REAL slock garbage unity rail shooter. I really do miss the thrill of arcade shooters.
It sucks to think how much work were put into those special machines and are probably salvaged for other parts or sitting in some warehouse collecting dust right now. And yeah, the VR game rentals usually are an even bigger rip-off too than even very difficulty arcade shooters since a lot of them give you a 5 minute playtime, but the objective is to win or finish something in under a minute Just can't replicate some of the things in arcade shooters in any other way too like the Silent Scope sniping games. I think if there's one thing a VR rental game can actually take advantage of and actually be really fun is if it can play something like Police 911 instead of the usual dull Unity static shooter that happens to be VR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiKa9aC6gQ8
