Good evening all.
It has come to my surprise that Garry's Mod will no longer launch on my machine.
When I attempt to launch the game the screen goes black (like it's trying to change resolution) and then quits Garry's Mod.
I've reinstalled the game several times, including deleting the Garry's Mod folder. And I've re-installed Steam. I have tried to force
different Direct X versions, boot the game in windowed, boot the game with different resolutions, restarted my machine, checked all
drivers are up to date and checked that another program is interfering with the game.
Nothing is working, I've been searching for a solution online for the past 6 hours so I'm turning towards the forums.
Thanks,
Ethan

Open the game folder where HL2.exe is and look for .mdmp files created when the game closes (so recent ones, from the same day/hour). Attach 1 or 2 here if you find some.
I have none (Stated at above my PC specs) but thanks anyway.
Try launching the game game with -noaddons -noworkshop, try the Chromium or x64 branches.
Try renaming the file garrysmod/cfg/mountdepots.txt and trying to launch the game then (disables mountable games)
Also try doing the same with mount.cfg in the same folder.
I don't have a mountdepots.txt file. Also when renaming the mount.cfg file, windows didn't know how to launch the game giving the "open with" box.
That makes no sense. Have you ever launched/played the game successfully before on that installation?
What do you mean "windows doesn't know how to launch the game", mount.cfg is a completely different file to hl2.exe. Steam uses to hl2.exe to launch the game, not mount.cfg
If you reinstalled the game and now you don't have cfg/mountdepos.txt, make one and put the following into it, it will unmount all mountable games ( even the ones mounted by default ) which will stop GMod from trying to load files from them.
"gamedepotsystem"
{
"hl2" "0"
"tf" "0"
"dod" "0"
"ep2" "0"
"episodic" "0"
"hl2mp" "0"
"lostcoast" "0"
"hl1" "0"
"portal" "0"
"left4dead2" "0"
"portal2" "0"
"csgo" "0"
}
Right, after renaming the mount.cfg file windows was responding with "How do you want to open this file"... on the damn executable.
After a fresh reinstall of Windows 10, the game launches. But now crashes at around 5 minutes into the game (I'm making a separate post for this issue)
From here on out though, this issue is CLOSED.
