https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/190497/52185084-363b-45b9-b16f-18cb5a0eaece/image.png Super Smash Bros. is a popular crossover platform-fighting game series produced and published by Nintendo. Directed by Kirby creator Masahiro Sakurai, SSB brings together various Nintendo series and pits them against each other in an all-star battle. The gameplay of the Super Smash Bros. series is unique. None of the characters have health bars, for one thing. Rather, they all have a damage gauge. When a character is attacked, their damage gauge increases, which in turn makes them weaker and easier to knock off the stage. Falling off of the stage results in a KO. Another unique aspect of SSB is that, unlike most fighting games, characters' movesets are very simplistic. Each character has their own set of ground and aerial attacks, which can be directed with the control stick. Tapping the control stick in one direction and holding the attack button charges up a smash attack, which is quite useful for knocking opponents off the stage. Characters also have four special moves, which can be activated by pressing the special move button and holding the control stick up, sideways, down, or leaving it neutral. If you've never played a smash brothers game, but are thinking about it, then now is the best time too! There are so many resources available on how to play each game and with the growing popularity of platform fighters, there's a bunch of games in the same style as Smash, such as Rivals of Aether, Icons, and many more. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/190497/fdf84956-edd7-4e7e-a9e6-2a3b3a8e0910/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/190497/b36a9edc-82dd-4032-8436-380eafee484c/image.png Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo All-Star! Dairantō Smash Brothers) Platform: Nintendo 64, Virtual Console (Wii) Original release date: JP: January 21st, 1999 NA: April 26th, 1999 EU: November 12th, 1999 The game from 1999 that started it all. Released on the Nintendo 64, Super Smash Bros is often overlooked today, but on its release proved wildly popular. Most people play the American NTSC version (due to bugs that are in the game, higher frame rate, consistency across regions), it's well worth playing it for a different experience to the other Smash Brothers. One of the key differences is the abundance of 0 - death combos. You can be carried across from one side of the stage all the way to the other in a single string, it's nuts. However, due to a smaller roster of 12 players, every character is mostly viable. This means you can play, have fun and not worry too much about the intricacies of the game when you play casually. Melee (Dairantō Smash Brothers DX) Platform: Nintendo GameCube Release date: JP: November 21st, 2001 NA: December 3rd, 2001 EU: May 24th, 2002 AU: May 31st, 2002 The most well known of the series, Melee has established itself with a huge competitive community even after 14 years since its release, featuring at huge FGC events such as EVO. That's not just why people play it though, they play it because it's an incredibly fun, technical game. Nothing is quite like landing rests against your friends, or performing a Falcon Punch to Knee for the first time against a CPU. Melee has 26 playable characters, so you will always be able to find someone to suit your play style. If you don't want to play against people, there are numerous single player modes. In adventure mode, you'll be taking your character through various game franchise scenarios to kill a demonic hand. You can also perform in "events" of increasing difficulty, and collect some trophies along the way. Read more about the technical side of Melee : Warning huge fucking document Otherwise, just watch some games and practice it. This year there has been a huge number of tournaments, and most evenings there is a meetup playing live on Twitch. It can seem tricky at first, but after a few practice sessions of movement and getting used to the controls, you'll be triple wave shinning into rest into knee in no time. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/190497/ce5c1e1a-b8da-42af-ae31-ff6e82d84a81/image.png Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Dairantō Smash Brothers X) Platform: Wii Release date: JP: January 31st, 2008 NA: March 9th, 2008 EU: June 26th, 2008 AU: June 27th, 2008 Brawl is the third entry to the series, and perhaps the most controversial of the games. It features a strong single player campaign, a huge amount of content and several now fan-favourite new characters. It was also the first of the series to feature online play, although the quality of this online was debatable. Brawl these days is mostly unplayed competitively, due to the slower gameplay. However despite this, the strong singleplayer experience makes the game still worth playing today. There is also Project M, a comprehensive mod for Brawl which makes the gameplay more in-line with Melee's gameplay, as well as offering a ton of brand new custom content for stages, characters and more. It brings back gameplay features such as wave dashing, quick movement and large ad-hoc combos across the stage. It is considered by many to be the definitive version of Smash, however it has had a lack of support from Nintendo and Tournaments, and as such has a small (but dedicated) community. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198768/ba387b01-7199-4735-9f98-7fcd32cd4f89/sm4sh.png Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U (Dairantō Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U) Platform: Nintendo 3DS, Wii U Release date: JP: September 13th, 2014 (3DS) / December 6th, 2014 (Wii U) NA: October 3rd, 2014 (3DS) / November 21st, 2014 (Wii U) EU: October 3rd, 2014 (3DS) / November 28th, 2014 (Wii U) AU: October 4th, 2014 (3DS) / November 29th, 2014 (Wii U) The latest installment of the Smash Bros series, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS was released over a year ago. It is characterised by having the easiest gameplay to get into, with buffered controls and fluid movement. This means it is much more accessible to the wider audience. While the gameplay is not as fast as that of Melee,it definitely is a lot of fun to play, since many issues that Brawl had were fixed and it having a faster gamespeed than its predecessor. Counting every character, including DLC, Smash 4 has 58 different playable characters and a plethora of stages to play on. Of course it still has classic and all-star mode like the previous titles did as single player content, with a few added modes such as Smash Run, Smash Tour, or Master/Crazy Orders, but it lost adventure mode, which has been around since melee. But even with some content being cut, it still has an overwhelming amount of new additions that make the game amazingly fun to play. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/190497/636a54b9-001d-44c0-b7d0-798ee800aacc/image.png Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Dairantō Smush Brothers SPECIAL) Platform: Nintendo Switch Projected release date (WW): December 7th, 2018 On June 12th 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has finally been officially shown for the Nintendo Switch, said to be released on December 7th, 2018. The subtitle Ultimate is no joke, as they decided to include every single character that has ever been in a Smash game, including fan-favourites such as Snake, Cloud, and even Pichu - but returning characters aren't the only highlight here. Aside from Inklings, who have already been teased back in March, they are making the dream real - Ridley. The gameplay has been shown at the Nintendo Treehouse at E3 2018, with many players being impressed with the newly introduced and re-introduced mechanics, and the game is sure to have a bright future with the abundance of content it will offer. With the Direct on 8/8/2018 a whole 5 new characters were confirmed for the roster: Simon and Richter Belmont, Chrom, Dark Samus, and King K. Rool, fulfilling yet the wishes of many people who have voted for them in the Smush Ballot. The Nintendo Direct on 9/13/2018 also brought along Isabelle from the Animal Crossing series, surprising many as a full character and not an echo. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/190497/335f37fc-5019-4cb5-b7d9-2fe7f52233e8/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198768/9e2e2ce6-4338-4c40-b20e-10e9b23c4e5f/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198768/48f5494c-9c70-442c-b429-a756d52121da/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/185183/b0a4ac5a-e522-4f16-8437-ff8ae67f883d/grafik.png The Official Site - Take a looksie at all the characters, DLC and spoil yourself the unlockable characters. god damnit this wasnt my intention I hate post limits so to quote again: I know im roughly 1 month early but when do games usually "unlock" - like at what specific *time* would Ultimate be to become playable? Is it like Steam where its almost always 19:00 (For me, so Berlin Time) or is each game havin something else?
According to Nintendo's Support section, "12:00 a.m. ET on the game's release date."
these threads die faster than smash characters from laser beams
Hm, that must be for first-party stuff only. I remember being up past midnight into the date that Runner3 would release and it wasn't available for a good while, and I'm on the East Coast. Was only unlocked after I went to bed for the night and woke up later that morning.
So, when Smash Ultimate comes around, will we have FP tournaments and stuff?
Look at this photograph https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1822/cfce0598-1d6f-45dd-942b-b782a134196b/ezgif-1-777c9fe2905f.gif
The Support page mentioned it was different for first vs third party releases sometimes, but that first party releases are 12:00 am ET. So you would be correct that it varies, but not for Smash Ultimate though.

Wow ben shapiros hand really rekt all these liberal weaboos with his facts and logic beams.
I don't think these were posted last thread? https://www.ssbwiki.com/images/7/72/KenHeadSSBU.png https://www.ssbwiki.com/images/3/38/PiranhaPlantHeadSSBU.png https://www.ssbwiki.com/images/5/50/IncineroarHeadSSBU.png
I'm going to miss Zubat Charizard and Aerodactyl Charizard...
Posting this again for awareness Reminder: If you are getting Ultimate digitally, install it on your internal storage instead of your MicroSD for faster load times. How to install games on your internal storage: If you've already downloaded it to MicroSD, enter Settings > Data Management > Manage Software, then Archive the game to quickly uninstall it. Save data is unaffected. Power off your Switch by holding the power button, Power Options, then Turn Off. Remove your MicroSD card. Power your Switch back on, and check Data Management to ensure you have enough room (Ultimate is ~13GB) Purchase the game via the eShop, or select the game's archived icon (cloud with an arrow) if you've already bought it. Wait for the download to complete, then follow the steps to power your device back off, insert your MicroSD again, and power it on once more.
It's pretty stupid that I can't move it to internal storage and/or to microSD on Data Management.

Might want to update the Ultimate part on the OP
I know the OP links a Nintendo FP direct, but would anyone want to make a Smash FP Direct? Or, would that be too niche?
They said they wanna wait until the game release or something
Noted. I'll write something up in a little bit; right now I'm at training.
Zero's pre-release tier list. RIP Bowser Jr https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1822/64e125d9-d707-4966-9f71-456f74489b74/Untitled.png
lol fucking hell, the two big fan favorites K Rool and Ridley on opposite ends of the spectrum. Great for K Rool, but ffs Ridley
If what he says is true, this will be the first Smash that Zelda isn't bottom tier.
Also surprise at Roy and Chrom. I figured Chrom would just be a better Roy and Roy would suck again lol. but yea ofc this is just early 'tier' list.
Nah, Chrom's air speed is so absolutely garbage that he can't recover. I was expecting him to be better because Roy's sweetspot mechanic combined with a poor recovery makes him just a less functional Marth, but nope, they basically homogenized the hitboxes so hard he has no KO options and has no way to recover with Aether at a distance because his fall speed and horizontal air movement basically don't let him get anywhere. Easily bottom 5 and probably the worst if Bowser Jr isn't. It's as if Aether was meant to be paired with a second recovery move.. . . .
I'm not sure if this is the place to post it but here's my roster for smash ultimate Blue characters are locks, the two yellows are competing for a lock, and the reds I wanna try out. https://i.imgur.com/02nTj74.jpg I'm a little disappointed but also hyped that I've seen multiple pros predict Olimar is very strong because I've been playing Olimar since brawl but I'm a little worried that people will think I'm a metaslave
Who I'm looking to pick up the most: 1) King K Rool 2) Ryu/Ken 3) Simon/Richter 4) Piranha Plant 5) Ganondorf 6) Snake Who I might play as additionally if they aren't raw garbage and get the buffs they need -Bowser -Little Mac -Pac-Man Will play if his meta isn't just up tilt, up air and up B: -Mario
I'd be very surprised. It almost makes me want to re-merge her and Sheik (reassign transform to Sheld+B, now that that's a thing with Inkling's refill input) just to - unlike previous games - actually see people actively switch between them rather than "Sheik is speedy combo boy, Zelda's only useful move is Down+B!" Hell, re-merge both her and Samus/ZSS (although that would put Samus at a pretty big advantage over Dark Samus).
No thanks, transformation was a cool gimmick but it just locked characters behind an input or another character in-game. I'd prefer they stuck with the current focus of making them their own unique and fulfilling characters, especially since for Zelda and Sheik specifically, they've completely diverged and aren't even the same character canonically anymore (Sheik is Hyrule Warriors Sheik, Zelda is Link To the Past/Between Worlds incarnation, where Sheik doesn't exist AFAIK). There's literally no reason to re-merge them except for nostalgia, and concerning Samus and ZSS, their transformation gimmick was stupid and tacked-on anyways, they're way better off being two unique characters.
Like I've said before, I just hope we have a new "best character" in Ultimate. Not Pikachu, Fox, Meta Knight, or Bayo.
I hope for a meta that isn't defined by a single character to the point that they dominate tourneys and control every single match-up, because fun metas are ones where a lot of characters are viable.
