The Fallout 76 beta now locks the FOV and caps framerate at 63 fps

Last week we were able to run some initial benchmarks of Fallout 76 to see how it fares on various GPUs. Today, with the second to last beta and a 30GB update in hand, we hopped back in to find Bethesda's short-term fix to speed hacking. As we feared, rather than fixing the engine to properly handle higher framerates and refresh rates, a framerate lock is now in place, and adjusting FOV (field of view) is likewise disabled.
We tried editing the INI files as before, including setting them to read-only, all to no avail. The third-person FOV defaults to 80 (though you can still press and hold the middle mouse button and move the mouse to zoom out a bit more), and the first-person FOV defaults to 90.
As for the framerate cap, it appears to be fully enforced and hard-coded into the engine. Previously, Fallout 76 would run at your display's desktop refresh rate, up to 75Hz, or half the refresh rate on high-end gaming displays (eg, 72fps on a 144Hz display). Now, the maximum in-game framerate is 63fps as far as I can tell, slightly higher than 60 in order to reduce microstuttering. That applies to 75Hz and 144Hz displays as well, though if you run at a lower rate like 98Hz you'll end up at 48fps if you set iPresentInterval=1
Pretty much most of the article, it's small.
Way to go Bethesda, really fixing these speedhack problems, huh.
Lol, rather than fix the issue they just hard cap the framerate.
Fuck off Bethesda, no chance you're getting my money.
This game is such a shit show.
Considering this is their first "fix" to gamebyro being tied to frame rate in over a decade, it's certainly what I'd expected them to do. Quick and nasty to go with the rest of their shitcode™
It doesn't feel like it lol
knowing Bethesda, "90" in their game engine is not the industry standard of "90" in other engines.
Blame their viewmodel scaling, it's all over the place.
Anything less than 100 blows
You can fix the FoV issues with a simple console command, fov 90 90
Done.
Oh wait we can't use a console to do that because it's been disabled, oh but we could use shit to fuck the game up lol k den.
Just, fuck you Bethesda.
90 degrees in Bethesda's engine actually refers to how long it takes to melt a snowman at 90 degrees Fahrenheit in picoseconds divided by the surface area of the moon. This measurement is then converted from radians to mathematical degrees.
"I don't care of the game has some issues, I think the game is fun with friends :D"
It baffles me that people use dumb excuses like this and end up buying this $60 crap. Even Bubsy 3D can be "fun with friends".
It is an enjoyable experience when you get past the jank.
The problem is, is it worth enabling this kind of development work for an enjoyable experience?
I am quite opposed to the terrible shitfest that is Bethesda, but playing Fallout with friends sounds quite fun. I'll wait for some mods to turn it more into a proper Fallout world, and some private servers, but I'm pretty sure I'll buy it eventually. If the Fallout 4 NV mod can find it's way to this game, then I'm sold.
If backyard wrestling proved anything, throwing someone off the roof into some fluorescent lights can be fun with friends.
Cap removing mod coming soon I guess
Bethesda are the only AAA dev I can think of that promise their customers a million things and then leave them to finish the game that they developed, and charge a cool $60 for it.
Well, all the other AAA devs promise their customers a million things and then leave them middle finger, and charge a cool $60 for it.
I hate how much fun Bethesda's games are, because this really is a pathetic display. Disgustingly lazy.
Yes! This will solve the games other security vulnerabilities! Unencrypted packets, peer to peer connections... I totally don't see a repeat of GTA 5 here! Game of the year for sure!
If my game wasn't a gift, I'd refund it.

Stolen from lmaopics but is very relevant
90 fov is perfect what the fuck y'all on about? I ain't a fuckin fish
I need it at 110 or I get sick to my stomach now especially in stutter messes like Bethesda games because their inbuilt vsync is vomit inducing.
I also have something relevant to add from lmaopics.

The landscape in the background represents Bethesda's integrity and the plane is Todd Howard.
It's the least of my worries, actually. At least it's not something fucktarded like 45-degree FOV and I'll be honest, once you go higher you start getting the problem of a view that's too zoomed out as opposed to too zoomed in
No see what gets me is that they said in interviews that they borrowed the netcode from IDtech and I mean I dont know the internals of the game but you'd think it would mean "Everythings not running on a peer to peer network.
I think the worst omen is that there would have been just a shrug if this fix was in the game from the getgo, I mean people would be all "How come my quad-GTX-2666X machine rig can't run this game at more then 63 fps FIX IT BETHESDA" but I don't even own a single GTX-2666 so I'd just shrug but now you have a bad omen for how the game's security runs. Like what the fuck dude?
Skyrim back in 2011 was the last game I got from them, I've avoided buying Bethesda games ever since because of their garbage gamebryo engine. Shitty performance, buggy, bad graphics, they should get on with the times and use a new engine.
Ok, maybe this is a hot take for FP, but I find the game fun, what, am I suppose to not buy and play what I find fun since YOU don't like it? I don't even need friends to play it to have fun, I mostly played it solo, and only one person I knew got it, and rarely has time to play, especially with those shit beta times.
God, this is "fun is a buzzword" tiers of fucking stupid.
If you pull the FOV far enough, you will see that Fallout 76 is just a dream in the mind of a prisoner being carried in a wagon.
There are genuine concerns with Fallout 76, but there's still some merit in the game from what I've seen and played. It's far from perfect, I will say that, but I'm at least glad they're not pulling off that typical AAA shit where they release a big game, and then just fuck off. Some developers don't even have the decency to continue supporting their games.
Nevertheless, as with everything Bethesda ever seems to release, an especially loud crowd just want the product to crash and burn regardless of its content. People will make mountains out of molehills, and use pretty much anything as an affirmation of their hate for the game.
Hey, if you’re having fun, then don’t let anyone stop you, but quite a few points still stand:
This game still uses a fucking disgrace of an engine.
Technical issues are glaring and, most likely, won’t be fixed if the Beth’s track record is anything to go by
Horrendous Security exploits.
All of this and they still expect a full $60 price tag on top of premium shop content. Yes, nearly every AAA game does this. No, that doesn’t make it any better.
Exactly what I thought they would do.
Why delay the game to fix a problem that's been around for more than a decade when you can just hard cap the FPS, never fix the issue, and just wait until everyone forgets about it?
Also, take note of the 63 FPS cap. This is because they still also haven't fixed the 64hz bug after more than a decade as well. If they cap the game at 60 FPS, you'd get microstutters.
Basically, despite the fancy new scripting language and other new bells and whistles, Bethesda's engine has practically been exactly the same since Oblivion (Morrowind really seeing as NetImmerse evolved into Gamebryo).
Also one thing I learned just yesterday, NetImmerse was originally designed with multiplayer games (mostly MMOs) in mind. So if you think about it, Bethesda took an MMO focused engine, stripped out all the MMO bits over the years, and is now trying to make a multiplayer game with their stripped down engine...
