The last death-free day on Texas roads is old enough to vote.
Wednesday marks 18 years since the last time Texas went a full day without a roadway fatality, an anniversary state officials commemorate each year with a barrage of social media campaigns, centered around #EndTheStreak.
The stretch has been a deadly one for Texas. In the 6,575 days, more than 66,000 people have died. A number that, all things considered, contributes to the Houston region being the deadliest major metro area in the nation for roadway deaths, which has been the centerpiece of a Houston Chronicle investigation, Out of Control.
About 640 people a year die on Houston-area roads, and 2,850 more are seriously injured. All factors considered, the road wreckage makes Houston the most deadly major metro area in the nation for drivers, passengers and people in their path.
Streak of death days on Texas roads reaches 18 years
Yep, the highway in front of my office is a high fatality spot. We get rollovers and pileups every time it rains. Texas roads are dangerous. The population has exploded and our highway system just wasn't built to handle the amount of traffic we get, plus everyone speeds all the time.
Reliable free public transportation now please
Almost everyone speeds a ton here. We did a little mini-study in an ethics class once and more than half the class admitted to frequently driving 15+ over.
Yea I live in Texas and I don't care if the person behind me drives an inch away from my rear the max I ever go is 5 over, go around of crash into the back of me you impatient fucks. Try to shave off a negligible amount of time (like what, 3 minutes or some shit) by risking your and other peoples' lives, funniest shit is watching them zoom past you all mad and then come to a stop half a mile ahead of you at a red light that you just drive up casually on.
Oh yea I respect common courtesies, I yield to pedestrians in parking lots, never cross the white line at reds incase someone needs to cross, never get close up behind anyone so there is proper space to stop, always use a blinker at least a 100 feet before a turn, check my blind spots before switching lanes and signal at least 5 seconds before doing the maneuver instead of just turning it on AS I DO IT and definitely avoid the left lane on fast roads unless I need to make a left.
Square
we had a little rain here last week. There were 12 accidents on the highway between my house and work.
If you're one of those cunts only going 5 over in the fast lane then please do the world a favor and stop driving. I feel much safer around a guy driving at his comfortable speed while minding the speed of other drivers over the asshole staring at his speed and being too stubborn to move over.
Well I mean I explicitly said above in a post that I let people pass me and only go into the left for turning, but I feel there is only a handful of a reasons that a person should go above 5 over usually in the domain of pregnancies and other emergencies, being late for work is not one of them of course. And yea I am pretty robotic and square about the rules but I have seen what a body looks like torn to pieces by metal and I don't want that to be the last thing I feel or the last way my family sees me. Speeding just isn't worth it and is why there are caps to speeding in the first place, and that includes the fast lane, but so many people think that shit won't happen to them until they're missing an arm or they get to see someone splattered by their decisions.
they cant even get it right when you pay for it
Honestly I disagree with this mindset. The left lane should be for passing only it is not a 'fast-lane' and under no circumstances should you be cruising 10mph faster than the flow of traffic in the left lane. The yahoos that constantly hang out in the left lane travelling 10+ faster than the middle lane are just as dangerous. They can make the passing lane unsafe when there is a major speed difference not to mention a lot of those same drivers tend to tailgate and force people over causing unsafe merging into the middle lane. There is nowhere that you need to be that requires travelling 10mph faster than the flow of traffic. Chill out, slow down and drive predictably. Just because you're comfortable driving fast doesn't mean that it's safe to drive fast, now if the conditions are ideal and the flow of traffic is right then sure, haul ass.
As a pedestrian, people who ignore simple instructions on the basis of "GOTTA GO FAST" piss me off.
I imagine it's easy to forget how the car your driving is a massive metal object moving at high speeds when you drive every day. There's a damn reason for the rules of the road.
I feel like people should have to pass the road test more than once in their life, considering how common stone-cold sober drivers still crash.
I don't know what a reasonable interval would be, maybe 5 years? Still, that inconvenience will be too much for most drivers not to complain, no matter how many people die on an annual basis in crashes.
Who said anything about driving 10mph over the flow of traffic? Or anything about driving erratically? Different states have different norms on driving behavior but I have yet to drive in a state where the norm was riding the designated speed limit in every lane. If you want to go slower that's great, stay to the right. Dont be a cunt slowing down the flow of traffic in the fast lanes.
Have driven in Texas, not surprised. I realised something was different when I was driving behind a school bus in the slow lane, doing 80 MPH, in a 55 MPH limit.
I'm using the term "slow lane" loosely because people seem to just pick a lane randomly and stick with it, irrespective of speed. To overtake, you have to weave in and out of traffic. Also nobody indicates lol, and people drive huge pickups as though they were sports cars
Driving slow in the left lane is a bigger hazard than driving fast in the left lane. I use it as a passing lane but if you have a soccer mom going 65 out of spite (or god forbid slower) it demonstrably causes more danger than someone flying down the lane.

People who drive slow are cunts and cause more problems than they solve by trying to play traffic cop by being a slowpoke in the passing lane. There should be no tailgating in the passing lane because if someone is riding your ass YOU SHOULDN'T BE THERE. If you're not passing someone shit or get off the pot.
The sense of entitlement that some people have for going over the speed limit is dangerous. I'm not saying that driving slow in the passing lane isn't dangerous I'm suggesting that it's also dangerous to travel faster than the flow of traffic. Tons of people that primarily drive in the passing lane have this idea that if you're not driving faster than them then you should move over. My point is that people are comfortable driving at different speeds, someone in the passing lane shouldn't have someone riding their ass nor should anyone EXPECT someone to move over just because they're travelling slower than themselves. I agree that travelling slower than posted limits is dangerous regardless of what lane you're in but honestly, acting like there's some sort of moral high ground for speeding is ridiculous. Slow the fuck down.
You're not the problem I'm referring to. Of course going excessively fast is dangerous especially if you're well above traffic flow speeds. But if traffic flow is 75 and you're going 65 in the left lane then that's absolutely a problem. Whether the speed limit is 60 and you're doing 5 over or not. My problem is people who don't give a shit and refuse to follow traffic flow because they think they're doing a good thing by being dicks to people who are speeding.
Not surprising. Texan drivers are shit and some of the worst I've experienced.
Traffic deaths are a pretty big blind spot in our society. The number of people who die on the road is horrible yet we've all come to accept these as a fact of life. Too often people, me included, take stupid risks in traffic that in hindsight offer no value to us. A few seconds of time saved is not worth the risk of taking a risky maneuver. We've grown too accustomed to cars and traffic and we forget that these can be weapons that can end a life in an instant.
Texas has some of the craziest fucking drivers
Most people do not know how to drive in any type of weather condition. I'm glad I live in a smaller town because when I went to the Houston and San San Antonio areas it was literally a death race. No one went the speed limit, but to stay with the flow of traffic you had to go nearly 90mph.
If you're interested in statistics, IIHS has some statistics on road fatality rates for each state, each type of vehicle, number of occupants, restraint use, alcohol involvement, rural vs urban, etc. etc.
To be honest, Texas isn't really an outlier; they have 1.43 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled for a population of 27,862,596. If you want crazy, look at South Carolina.
In 2016, for a population of 323,127,513, the USA has had 37,461 deaths related to vehicles. That's pretty low compared to the developing world, but high compared to most of the west. There's still a lot we as a nation can do to lower this number.
