Yeah the AG needs to be confirmed by the Senate. So someone takes their place with limited power as "acting" AG.

There's literally no mystery to this, Trump has straight up publicly said that he hates Sessions because he recused from the Mueller probe and couldn't obstruct it on his behalf. Sessions has done nothing else to upset Trump. It's not even a situation of like "heh we know what Trump is REALLY up to" he has publicly announced it

The question is how much damage Trump will do between now and January 3 when the new Congress starts.
All the same, I'm surprised he didn't try this sooner. It's not like the spineless sycophants in Congress would stop him back when GOP owned all three branches.
He very likely saw it as a potential outcome, but then again everyone saw it coming. It was just a question of when would the spray tan in a can actually do it.
