The oldest of the series, and it definitely shows. It's got arguably some of the most complex and player involving mechanics of the entire series. For a CRPG of this era it's surprisingly approacheable, and can be bought very cheapily from GOG. Overall a must-try for fans of the series, if for no other reason than to pay homage.

Fallout 2 would release merely a year after Fallout 1, which on the surface level might show, as both Fallout 1 and 2 have similar graphics, gameplay and overall objectives (that being stopping a evil, unknown malevolent force, even if in Fallout 2 they are far more present) and locales. However, make no mistake, Fallout 2 is a more refined version of Fallout 1, iterating on many concepts that Fallout 1 left up in the air, including Portraits (special characters would have their own clay-like character portrait, although this was very restricted in Fallout 1, it's slightly expanded in 2), and it explores a world that's after the near-apocalyptic events of Fallout 1, and how the people have moved on. Another recommended game for sure.

Bethesda's Fallout 3 marks an important step for both Bethesda and the future of fallout. It's the first game to be in a fully 3D worldspace, in contrast to the previous isometric prespective games, and it uses the classic Bethesda formula, a formula who's only even remotely close comparison is "Far Cry" or "Assasin's Creed", albeit it's far better done by Bethesda, from a worldbuilding stance. It also marks the "casualization" of Fallout, in the sense that, due to it being on the opposite coast of the country and by a different team, there are many aspects of the lore that are retconned/ignored or butchered, and arguably even some of the game's themes are downright ignored.
The first fallout game by bethesda and first main-line game after 10 years, it's set on the opposite coast of the united states, the east coast, and even though it is set after the events of Fallout 1 and 2, make no mistake, the wasteland is just as deadly, if not more so. The in-game explanation for this is that the East has generally a higher concentration of people and government officials and, as such, was nuked far, far harder. The real explanation is bethesda wanted to make fallout 1 again.
Overall a good entry, although some might argue it has been eclipsed by Fallout 4 in several aspects. Play if the idea of a rebooted fallout franchise with the oblivion franchise sounds interesting, it's got the typical amazing Bethesda attention to detail, and as long as you ignore the main-quest, is a great game on it's own.
Mod overhauls:
For fallout 3 we're only looking at two major overhauls, one that's essentially a new experience, by the same team that brought you Nehrim and Enderal, and the other is a gameplay overhaul and more! They are:
Cube Experimental English German French Russian Italian Span at .. - Cube Experimental
and
FWE - Fallout Wanderer's Edition

Fallout: New Vegas is a post-apocalyptic action role-playing video game. It is a spin-off of the Fallout series and was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was announced in April 2009 and released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 19, 2010. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic open world environment that encompasses a region consisting of parts of Nevada, California, and Arizona. It is set in a world that deviated onto an alternate timeline thanks to atomic age technology, which eventually led to its devastation by a nuclear apocalypse in the year 2077 in an event referred to as "The Great War". This war was caused by a major international conflict between the United States and China over natural resources. The main story of New Vegas takes place in the year 2281, four years after the events of Fallout 3. It is not a direct sequel, but it does mark the return of a number of elements found in the Black Isle Studios-developed Fallout 2.Bethesda would hand down the development of a new fallout to a team very closely associated with the previous fallouts ,which means that, in a way, this game is a return to glory. Many consider it one of the best games ever made and, jankiness and all, potentially marks this game as a classic. It caters to both the RPG hungry fans of Fallout 1 and 2 by having many, many opportunites to roleplay and four different factions all with explicit goals and even understandable motifs. For the more combat-oriented fans of Fallout 3 and the later 4, New Vegas also expands upon the combat by allowing weapon modifications, various types of bullets, true ironsights and a semi-satisfying combat with a wide variety of weapons to choose from.
Mod overhauls:
New Vegas has undoubtedly received more attention, perhaps for being a fan-fauvorite amongst the community and, as such, has more overhauls in development/complete. These are:
Fallout - (SEMI)RELEASED - Project Brazil OR Fallout: New California, set some 20 years before the events of NCR, and closer to the NCR homeland. Great mod, amazing VA, really good worldbuilding and level-design, questionable writing/dialogue, gameplay's the same, terrible optimization so far, but they'll fix it!
https://www.falloutthefrontier.com - TBA - Fallout: The Frontier, with it's lovable broken-engrish and totally-not-MGSV trailers, the mod promises to be of the same scale as Project Brazil, by having the player travel to Oregon and facing the same challanges as in the Mojave Wasteland, only now aggravated by the colder weather of the northen american continent.
Project Nevada at Fallout New Vegas - RELEASED - a gameplay overhaul and an attempt to modernize the gameplay of new vegas, introducing a few features that'd later appear in fallout 4, like a dedicated projectile button and a sprint action.

Being the newest (released) game and set farthest in the future, it still doesn't necessarily show that, with the Boston Commonwealth the game is set looking like it was blasted a few decades ago, and not two centuries ago. Even so, it's far more cleaned up than the wasteland of Fallout 3 and you can see Bethesda was listening for criticism from Fallout 3 and praise from New Vegas, as attempts to correct the issues of 3 and imitate the virtues of New Vegas are seen throughout both the gameplay and story, with the expansion of waepon crafting, armor crafting and even settlement creation. The story is better than fallout 3 but still quite behind New Vegas, leaving little to no opportunity for the player to intervene in the story, although it does a better job to give some sense of player importance than Fallout 3 as it does give the player some superficial choices. Definitely a must-play for those more interested in the combat-aspect or even the modding aspect, but those who are most interested in the RPG mechanics should stick to New Vegas, or only buy Fallout 4 for the remake of New Vegas coming up or eve standalone mods.
Mod overhauls:
As far as I'm aware, there aren't any particular overhauls that are completed. Some very interesting and promising overhauls however include:
Fallout - Fallout Cascadia, set Seattle, in the year 2300 and something, it's by far the mod most furthest in the future, and explores not a post-apocalypse, but a post-post-apocalypse.
Fallout - Fallout Miami, is another fallout overhaul that's set in Miami, Florida, and the special types of mutations that'd occur in an already devil-ish state!
Fallout 4 New Vegas - Perhaps most interesting of all, Fallout 4 New Vegas is a remake of the New Vegas game fans so dearly adored, bringing the good of Fallout 4 (the gameplay and the graphics) and the good of new vegas (the skills, the rpg mechanics, the quests) to make a possible contender for MOTY.

What's new in Fallout 76?
The multiplayer is obviously the biggest component, but beyond that there are several new additions like a new SPECIAL system that goes up to 15 instead of 9, cards instead of perks that you pick every level, and a map that's around four times the size of the one in Fallout 4! With the multiplayer come all of the expected features, like Groups, Emotes, and assholes!
What's back from previous Fallouts?
Weapon Degradation
Weapon/Ammo Crafting
Settlement Crafting
More complex RPG mechanics, although different
A cleaner, more post-post-apocalypse wasteland, even though this one is by far the closest to the war, only 25 years later ???
Pipboy 2k! Wrist-mounted version though.
B.E.T.A
Controversially, unlike what the name suggests, the B.E.T.A isn't actually a beta, but it's basically a server stress-test. One does have to wonder what they were thinking both in name and in having a stress-test on the release day of RDR2 but that's fine.

New thread smell.
Start off with a question :
Do you imagine that FALLOUT 76 will have a solid, active playerbase 5 months down the line or do you imagine that it's population will fizzle out soon after launch?
I think it'll prevail for a moment. The Fallout series is immensely popular, plus I have no doubt people will mod the shit out of this game despite the lack of proper tools and GECK.
I feel like 76 is going to be the perfect simulation of a horrible future for humanity in more ways than intended.
Vaults open on the 14th Nov to thousands of dwellers emerging into a new and unforgiving world
Some team up, others fight amongst themselves
Eventually people rebuild small camps but no one truly rebuilds society
Groups of dwellers band together in makeshift alliances and "clans" but these don't last very long as no one can ever truly live with one another, nor trust one another.
Over time people disappear one by one
The few that remain are paranoid of one another as now that everyone has some serious pre war tech, any encounter could be the death of you both.
Eventually the land is empty once more, no bright eyed dwellers running around trying to rebuild america, only horrors as far as the eye can see as tougher and tougher monsters have emerged in response to the presence of the blue tides ever increasing power.
The land becomes deadly to anyone unfortunate enough to have been let out of their vaults this late, the weak perish and only those who befriend the few remaining original dwellers survive (but even this does not last long)
The world dies once more, no more humans exist in this barren waste save for the occasional dweller who stands alone in a world devoid of anyone but himself.
Can you imagine coming to 76 once the majority of players have left? Just experiencing a game with no friendly humans, no npcs really at all, and absolutely no other players. Just a dead world with nothing but endless horrors wanting to slay you again and again.
(In other news im genuinely looking forward to this shit, it might end up having a lot of issues but Im actually a huge fan of how empty it looks. Its just feels, different, than most other games in this vein)
After playing the Beta for a few hours I actually want the game now (I didn't before), but not at launch and not at full price.
Unless Bethesda do a really good job with new content, I can easily see it struggling to maintain a playerbase. The general opinion I've seen seems to be that despite the size of the world, there's really not anything interesting in most locations, and when there is something, it's delivered through holotapes that either become overwhelming because of their length, or just hard to listen to with everything else going on. There's also a lot of big games already out or coming out soon, so there's a lot to draw away the more casual players, especially once similar games like The Division 2 are out.
On top of that, 76's reputation is gradually getting worse and worse, even if some of it isn't entirely based in fact. It reminds me of what happened with Mass Effect Andromeda, and it didn't take long for that to get its support killed.
Well I mean it's not like FO76 isn't a worthwhile product for some people. The real issue is the price, content, and the execution of the game itself that has people going flaccid.
I think there will still be a market for Fallout 76 at the very least for the modding capabilities we might see in the future. Whether people are interested in modding the game itself, or doing the best thing and backporting assets for Fallout 4 to use, since there are a lot of things I'd kill to see added to that game.
Honestly, the faster official modding support comes, the better and more likely Bethesda will secure a future and potentially loyal playerbase for the game. All it would take is one good mod and
concept and then we can have people building entire sessions off that mod that do things I can only imagine about, but are most likely going to be significant improvements over the base game.
How the game will look within its first two months though? I'm not sure. I definitely think there will be a decline, once the overall interest and intrigue has gone away. 76 has some prominent competitors around this time of the year I imagine. I just hope Bethesda realizes that and will work hard to keep the game interesting and stable in these first two months. All eyes are on them since this is pretty experimental, and they'll look even worse if they just decide to abandon it early, or the first two months of content are just sparse bug fixes and patches to the inevitable gamebreaking things players will find once the mainstream audience gets their hand on it.
If they keep adding conetent like GTA5 then yes. Its years down the line and you still have a lot of players. This is on pc, despite the pay to win nature, balance problems and rampant hackers.
Yeah I was excited until I heard about it's very big security vulnerabilities. I know what I'm getting, a fallout game where you aren't chatting it up with NPCs but instead building hideouts, raiding other players and exploring a world much bigger then 4s.
What I don't want is someone spamming ten nukes on me because I insulted their mothers.
Apparently they were exaggerated.
Fallout Cascadia now has mining.
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/251514001958240267/509942049034731521/mining.gif
There was another thread on reddit that showed the communications between the client and server were secure for the most part.
Also the vault Wiki and Fallout Wiki are cataloguing all the 76 holotapes and lore for those who don't want the game but want to read
Devils advocate, but here's the thing, the speedhack stuff was found by accident. Yeah it's fixed (in a hacky measure) but it's a terrible omen, making the game go from something I was excited about to something I'm actually embaressed by on bethesdas behalf
Why though?
Apparently to provide a different way of acquiring materials.
Seems unnecessary though, like actually using a Pick-axe and physically hitting the rock to get materials, instead of a simple, 'Activate' prompt on the rock that says 'Mine' and it just collects it (Requires a Pick-axe in your inventory), but, to each his own, I'm sure there's people who find this to be a good thing.

I found this interview with Chris Avellone where he mentions that the campaign for Van Buren was run as a pen-and-paper game and those live sessions would influence development of the final product.
If Bethesda tried that with Fallout 3 or 4, the GM would've gotten his ass kicked

Its a shame because I legitamently find this trailer to be wonderful.
Yeah, I know, I'll get shitcanned because it's too goofy and fallout is a super serious series you guys. And I mean I know where you're coming from, new vegas was the best but it really should be self-evident that despite how much I love Fallout 1 and 2 (mostly F1) that Bethesda has a different vision for the series. I've personally sperated the change in tone and make the best of it, but really I just want something that's playable with F76 rather then some dickhole dropping five nukes on you via a clientside mod menu.
Bethesda, I know you ain't readin this, and I know this don't help, but look at GTA5 and learn from it's mistakes.
(cuz woulden't it be niiiiice)
If there's one thing I like about threads locking after 1,000 posts, it's the creativity in new thread names.
The exact same thing was in Skyrim. Activating it would play the mining animation, but hitting it in first person was faster.
Not only that, he ran two different pnp campaigns at the same time, with both groups existing in the same world, and they'd run across and affect stuff the others did/were doing. Some of those PCs were scheduled to be companions in Van Buren, too, and some even made it all the way to New Vegas. Arcade was Josh Sawyer's PC in the tabletop.
Do any of you try to develop pre-game life stories for your player characters?
I can't possibly imagine the kind of life that would produce the character I've made, and is also canon-compliant
I hope the game devs get the community message and add some of those highly requested basic missing features sometimes in the near future.

Can't you change the player FoV and the weapon viewmodel FoV separately from each other in Fallout 4 with a console command?
That accounts for most of my different characters. Fallout 4 made it a bit of a challenge though, until I got Start Me Up.
In Fallout 76, though, your options kind boil down to "I was an adult when the war happened" and "I was a child when the war happened/was born in the Vault." Of course, there are also tales on the Vault terminals about trouble makers who had to be locked in their rooms and whatnot, I guess you could decide your guy was one of them.
Tonight only on Twitch, Rick and Morty play 76.
I really, really hate the way this dude talks.
I still can't believe this is real.
If you're watching the steam, just be prepared for Justin to get shitfaced drunk so he can play the character, and stammer around the controls for it's entirety.
