In addition to the cancellations, it was also announced that Hajime Tabata, the man who took over from Tetsuya Nomura as director of the game in 2013, has left Square Enix.
Hopes for FF7 remake any time soon... fading...
Surprise! It's cancelled! It took so long to make this game people would rather quit than finish dlc.
Did FFXV just get Phantom Pain’d? lol
Will this actually be the Final Fantasy?
Depends...does the base game actually have a conclusive ending?
Looking it up, the extra DLC people were expecting was all announced due to the success of the initial DLC releases. So I'd hope that the DLC for the squad that did come out was all the core story content. Everything extra seems to be "but what if we talked about this character a bit".
It was a second year of DLC, with no season pass out for it and not even any known plans of how it would've been monetized.
Damn, I would have loved to play as Aranea. She's such a badass in the base game.
Keep in mind one of the cancelled DLCs was one that would have actually given Luna, the character that’s meant to be the deuteragonist of the fucking game an actual fleshed story instead of the less than 15 minutes of screen time she actually got in game.
Seriously Luna is probably the worst character that I have ever encountered that a game acts as the most important character in universe... and she’s not even in the game.
THE GAME IS MEANT TO BE A LOVE STORY
I think Square Enix has had enough of looking at 15 and just wanted to sweap it under the rug. The whole thing has been a disaster from start to finish.
Plus, i honestly don't think they can do FF7 remake any justice.
Sad state of affairs. FF15 is my favorite Final Fantasy game of all time, and it's a shame that it's gonna have these loose ends forever now.
Didn't they say they were thinking remaking the remake because the third party they hired to do the game did a horrible job?
Salvaging this game was probably one of the most impressive feats Tabata did considering the mess of a development history it had. I heard that most of the post release support was actually done at his request which really shows that he wanted the game to have some semblance of completeness. Its sad that the story itself still will be incomplete, but the idea of just releasing all of the major events in the game with the context as DLC is annoying as all hell.
Even with someone salvaging the game, whoever came up with the base gameplay needs a slap in the face or something. The combat is not intuitive in any shape or form considering how every encounter has you literally holding down the attack button and just watching the action unfold. At least XIII had some kind of strategic element with it's gameplay. I never once felt compelled to use any of the other weaponry apart from the one handed swords because of how unwieldy and simply not fun the rest of the weapons were. Then you get a magic super power set halfway through the game, but you can't even enjoy that because its supposed to be something you combo attacks off of, only everything dies in one hit, and nothing else in the game apart from one boss battle actually uses it.
Even then, the world itself is completely barren, enemies spawn on top of you instead of naturally populating the world. Instead of having an area in which you should avoid because 'Oh hey there are a lot of bad guys here!' You get booted out of your car at random at night because enemies just spawn on top of you. I once three demons spawn and despawn because I was just outside their attack range or something, so the game decided I couldn't use my car to get away.
For the 'Next-gen' Final Fantasy game people wanted the gameplay itself is a joke. But I have a lot of respect for Tabata getting something out there and actually giving a damn about whether or not the game is complete. Its a shame Square Enix dropped the ball so hard on it, because this is one of the few games that, graphically at least, felt 'next' generation. Its just the core gameplay is such a hot mess that even with a complete story, it is dull to play.
I, probably like many, were expecting a final fantasy game that played like Kingdom Hearts. Not this weird mixup between FFXIII and Kingdom Hearts that someone came up with the worst of both games implemented.
The story seemed intriguing though, too bad we will never know what actually was planned for it.
Yeah, XV isn't Tabata's fault at all, Nomura completely fucked him. Like, objectively left him with a trainwreck and went "You have like two years, finish my mess".
XV switched engines and basically restarted development 3 times because Nomura kept switching what he wanted to do. And somehow Square treats Nomura like he's their fucking golden child
The remake would have been shit anyway. It would have split up as several games, turned into an action game and would have probably been incredibly linear with most of the optional content from the original game gone.
