Witnesses say two police officers tried to subdue a man armed with a
knife after a car erupted into flames on Bourke Street in the Melbourne
CBD.
There's some apparent footage of the incident on Twitter

Fucking scary seeing the two coppers trying to engage him with batons
Glad to hear the cops got on top of things quickly. An ugly situation like that could have gotten out of hand fast
Someone needs some refresher training. Baton should have been dropped and gun pull the moment the guy produced the knife.
One dead, two injured. Attacker in critical condition in hospital

Imagine if this was in America and this guy had easily obtained a gun.
imagine if this was in america and nobody but the shooter had died because the police had been properly trained to deal with him, and had shot him 3 years prior for sneezing in their general direction
I'm amazed the cops were brave enough to try and go at the guy with batons first
and yet 12 people, including one officer died at thousand oaks just last night
I think it's too early to judge, it could be possible by the time they saw the knife they were already too close to redraw and pull up their gun. Not to mention the man was moving that crazy and it would of been hard to get a clean shot while dodging his slashes.
you may have skimmed over the sarcasm in that post. maybe read it again.
maybe use italics and not bold
Maybe, but credit where it’s due for the police officers at least attempting to resolve the situation without resorting to the American™ response with guns. I remember there was a similar incident about a year ago where an officer ended up shooting a knife-wielding man I think seven times, and it was very traumatising for the officer. The news article said this was being treated as a terrorism event. Does that mean the car fire was a result of an attempted car bomb? It sounds like his plan failed and then he resorted to knifing people before police arrived.
'Police said there was no known link to terrorism.' (from the ABC article)
And the shooter has croaked.
A lot of ASL is like that. I still remember Adam Hills did a comedy show with a sign interpreter, the gesture for "Hairy clitoris" is to hold up your hands on your face and wiggle the fingers like a tentacly beard, then rub the air at about crotch height.
I work nearby and was going to drop in to JB Hi Fi (which is right near where this happened) before my shift. I didn't because I was running late, but this happened right around the time I would have been there.
Never thought I'd be thankful for being held up by road works.
