Glace Bay teen tormented, used as human bridge by schoolmate
The 14-year-old boy cried describing how the video made him sad and embarrassed.
“It made me feel like I’m always getting bullied there and that no one cares,” said Brett, who has cerebral palsy.
Surrounded by about 30 students, Brett is lying face down in a torrent of shallow water bordering Glace Bay High School. A young woman steps on his back using him as a human bridge to avoid getting wet. Spectators laugh and a few record the spectacle. One boy fires a rock at him. The 18-second video that was posted on Facebook on Thursday morning ends with Brett standing up with a smile on his face.
The incident happened on Tuesday. It’s an accurate representation of the kind of the torment Brett says he endures at that school every day.“I’ve been bullied before and I tried to take this to the office and they ignored me like they ignored me back in September. I was threatened. Someone was making fun of me for stuttering and I flipped him off. He said, ‘You flip me off one more time, I’ll kick your teeth down your throat.’”
The video has since gone viral and has garnered hundreds of angry comments from people demanding the school take action.
Brett’s mother, Terri McEachern, said it was the video that finally prompted the school to suspend students who took part in the incident. She said she also called the school on Wednesday and was given no assurance that the matter was being dealt with.“I watched the video and I know the girl said to Brett ‘Lay back down. ... I don’t want to get wet,’” recalled McEachern.

Local news from here but I had to share this, never have I been more ashamed to live on this island.
Immediate expulsion for everyone involved but the poor kid
I have a brother who has cerebral palsy who recently tried to take his own life because of it, this really sickens me.
absolute fucking cunts, no remorse or empathy with them. I was bullied back in school, but only by a few people. couldn't imagine having an entire group of people purposefully out to bully you, barbaric.
Before this video went viral the victim was actually the only one initially suspended if you can believe that, after this video started making the rounds that changed.
And of course the school has yet to comment on this whole matter. I know the original poster of the video and he was saying the school was actually threatening him to take it down and he's a social service worker for goodness sakes!
Suspended for what?
Tbh I'm not sure exactly why, it was just mentioned in the post on facebook if i get any more info on that I'll edit this post though
The thing that really gets me is this in the article:
But Brett’s mom says she wants evidence showing the bullying will stop. “A teacher assistant at the school actually told him today it’s his fault that students are getting suspended, that he chose to take part in that incident and he should watch his actions.
This is the reasons teens kill themselves. This right here.
Here is the principal's email: mackenzit@staff.ednet.ns.ca
Probably for flipping people off, because that's so much worse than what's happened in this video /s
Back in the 4th grade or so a kid choked me out and I had to say sorry to him because I cursed when a yard duty took him off of me. US schools really have no idea how to handle bullying and just give the victim as much punishment as the bully.
Expulsion of the school staff and administration that let this happen
Someone was making fun of me for stuttering and I flipped him off. He said, ‘You flip me off one more time, I’ll kick your teeth down your throat.’”
Lmao, evil cunt can't handle retaliation.
Worst part is, that's his teachers assistant, the guy who's supposed to help the kids with disabilities keep up in class and he's calling him down. Absolutely awful.
Schools always suspend the bullying victim first hoping that they can throw the situation under the rug. I've been suspended and threatened with expulsion before when I was in middle school.
"Zero tolerance" policies are just there to cement bullying into law. Its absolutely horrendous.
How the fuck can kids be this evil? I could never imagine myself doing something so horrible as a kid. Not only do the students and school need to be looked into, but their families as well. What the fuck are the parents teaching their children?
Glace Bay is like the opiod capital of Nova Scotia, they even made a documentary about it called Cottonland.

Whole community is trash if you ask me
If this article is anything to go by, they'd probably beat the shit out of the victim instead.
Yeah but healthily fixing bad people is hard, beating weak people into submission is easy. Especially when parents tend to go mad when you discipline their children, because current year.
Kids can be such dumb fuckheads
It's a damn shame the frontal lobe doesn't develop further earlier on in life
I really do not get how the situation gets this mindblowingly fucked up in any school. there are probably maximum security prisons out there that have better behavior than this shit.
Those kids need an ass whooping.
This is what I sent.
Hello,
I recently saw a news article where a severe incident of bullying occurred at your school. I find this situation to be reprehensible, and what I find even more reprehensible is the fact that Brett Corbett was in fact suspended, for being bullied.
I suffered from bullying in middle school. There is no excuse for what bullies do, and in my time I consistently saw the bullies be rewarded with candy, and for me to apologize for being relentlessly picked on.
Its time that school officials finally make a real effort against bullying, and that starts with not punishing the bullied. All that does is make it worse. It does not teach the bully that what they are doing is wrong, only that they can keep getting away with it. No one deserves to bullied, and bullies deserve to be aptly punished for mentally and physically tormenting other students.
Frankly, the teaching assistant who told Brett it was his fault for being bullied either needs a formal, professional reprimand - or to be fired. That is victim blaming at its finest. And to blame a 14 year old who has cerebral palsy for being bullied is absolutely disgusting. I hope you take the time to reflect on what I, and many others, have been saying. You can help be a positive change for so many students - but it requires actual action. Posters that say "stop bullying" or "be nice" don't cut it.
Sincerely,
My Name
Honestly, that's probably a better email than mine just because of the amount of swears and general confrontational vibe I had in mine, while yours felt more like a proper email to a principal.
This is what mine said:
You're probably well aware of the controversy involving a disabled kid getting abused by other students from Glace Bay High School, aka your school. You're also probably well aware of the large amount of people giving your school justified shit for it. Allow me to join them.
Don't let this be the only time you punish bullies just because this particular incident gave your school bad publicity. In the future, you should be making an actual effort to discourage any kind of bullying and properly punish the abusers. Don't give the victim the same punishment (or worse) as his abusers just because he/she retaliated against them, especially when your school evidently didn't do a damn thing to combat bullying until now.
While you're at it, you should get your staff members to do the same. If they see someone getting bullied by another student, they need to take care of the perpetrator and send him to the office for suspension/expulsion. If any of your staff members are tolerating the abuse and saying that it's the victim's fault that he/she's getting abused, you need to fire them as soon as possible and replace them with someone who has basic decency.
Didn't help that I had "Stop tolerating bullies and do your damn job" as the subject title.
Very well said. Mine was really quite simple lol.
Hello, my name is _______. I recently saw the video of your students horribly tormenting one of their classmates in a barbaric display. This can not, and should not be allowed to happen, and is an absolute failure on your part as principal. Your refusal to comment only continues the narrative of ambivalence to bullying.
If you and your school have any morals you will expel all students involved in said video who decided not to help this poor boy. Anything less puts this boys' life long trauma from this event on you. Do something.
I have mild cerebral palsy myself and spent most of my school life being bullied for my speech and general joint weakness. While nothing to this degree ever happened to me I know exactly what it is like to have whole groups of student gang up on you and make your life shit. I'm just really fortunate that I had a music teacher who actually gave a shit.
I'm going to be sending an email too once I've got my nerves clamed down enough to actually put something across in polite English.
Thanks guys. I suffered too much in middle-school (and the first half of my freshman year of high school) to sit idly by and do nothing, so I had to say something. I've dealt a lot with schools, administrations, town government (I'm on the board of directors for a town organization), and otherwise more official e-mails so I had a bit of that experience with me haha.
Wanna thank you guys for taking the time to send an e-mail, you didn't have to and I think that's awesome.
I honestly think your messages will make a bigger impact, most people around here aren't too articulate also the fact that they are coming from a different country shows how far this spreads.
I'll be sure to update the thread as the story goes on, the original poster of the video is supposed to be interviewed by CBC and CTV so I'll be sure to post that when it comes.
I think kids don't quite understand the things they do most of the times.
Not in the way that "oh they know they're doing X", but more in the way of not knowing the pain they're causing to the other person.
It looks like they don't understand what its like to feel like the people they bully. They don't know what it feels like to not want to go to school because of a bunch of kids that make you feel like killing yourself.
Parents should get a bit more real with kids.
The thing is though that these are teenagers. By that point they surely would've learned what empathy is right? Surely they are aware of how much this hurts this poor student. I dunno, guess I just have a hard time wrapping my brain around something as awful as this.
