yeah it sounds dumb now let me give you the details so it sounds less dumb.
i have a fort in the centre of what we may as well call gm_flatgrass. i have been trying to reduce the lag when you look at the fort from the outside. inside the fort it isnt laggy because the inside already has the skip/hint brush job. but to reduce loss of framerate when looking from the outside of the fort i had an idea:
would it be effective to cover the entire top of the fort with an areaportal and obviously other exits to the fort?

One way to solve this would be using models with aggressive LODs, instead of brushes for basically the entire fort.
Since we don't know what's inside the fort, how complex that is, can't really suggest much else.
Area portals will not really work for sandbox gamemodes especially the top one. It works for doors that can be closed to be completely opaque.
