After watching his boss Jeff Sessions hand in his resignation at the request of President Donald Trump, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has issued a pretty clear
endorsement of acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.
Rosenstein, who appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel, has called Whitaker a “superb choice” to fill in as attorney general. Formerly, Whitaker was Sessions’ chief of staff.
Even further back, Whitaker was a U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa.
“I think he’s a superb choice for attorney general. He certainly understands the work, understands the priorities of the department. I think he’s going to do a superb job as attorney
general,” per CNN correspondent Laura Jarrett.
The comments were made outside of an investiture ceremony for U.S. Attorney Zachary Terwilliger. Terwilliger was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia on
Friday in Alexandria, Virginia. The remarks were described as “a clear attempt at displaying department solidarity.”
Rosenstein had been heading the Russia Probe ever since Sessions recused himself from the investigation. Although Rosenstein is expected to “continue to handle the day-to-day
management of the probe, as he would for any other significant criminal investigation,” the final say now falls to Whitaker as acting AG.
Rod is giving us the rod.
Pretty sure he's expecting Whitaker to recuse and is sucking up to Trump so he doesn't fire him in babyrage when Whitaker recuses.
I mean, if Rosenstein supports him he can't be that bad... Right?
Yeah, this is way off from his usual stance and he has shown himself to be a pretty headstrong and smart man. If he's saying this about Whitaker, he has an angle he is working. Either he expects a recusal, or perhaps even he sees that this makes an obstruction of justice case even stronger because of how blatant Whitaker is.
He's an absolute nut and an affront to the legal profession.

Right, I'm of the same mind, but Rosenstein has been pretty faithful in allowing the Mueller investigation to continue unimpeded, so there must be some reason for the praise
Its not like Rosenstein can be seen as anything but supportive.
Even fox news says Whitaker is illegal
let this sink in
That's a very optimistic interpretation of the situation
Rosenstein isn't a Trumpster so I don't see how in any way Rosenstein actually thinks he's qualified.
Might simply be that Rosenstein might be toeing the line because, without the saber to rattle of the Mueller Probe, he might be defenseless against some sort of blackmail that's being hung over his head. I wouldn't put it over this administration.
Rosenstein is playing it safe. Trump and his mob buddies are probably scanning for targets right now, and Rosenstein doesn't wanna paint one on himself by saying "this guy's an asshole".
Shame it has to work this way though. Tired of this criminal adminstration. Screw the GOP in the Senate and their complicity.
It doesn’t benefit Rosenstein to stir shit right now, that’s all. Badmouthing your new boss is not a good step.
But you know what, it makes sense. Trump literally handed him this opportunity on a silver platter, so he might as well take advantage of it to ensure that the investigation continues unabated. I'd totally do it too if I was in his situation.
