Tony Abbott and conservative MPs campaign to take back control of Liberal party
The tight-knit group, which includes Abbott, the MP for Hughes, Craig Kelly, the MP for Canning in Perth, Andrew Hastie, and the New South Wales senator Jim Molan have embarked on a series of events at rightwing branches exhorting conservatives to take back control of the Liberal agenda.
Abbott and his group have been holding a series of functions aimed at inspiring the conservatives to step up for what is likely to be a bitter internal struggle within the powerful NSW branch should the Liberals do poorly at the polls. Themes at these talks are the myth of the climate change crisis, the rise of the left agenda and the need to make Australia secure.
Six weeks ago Abbott and his group were star billing at the Middle Harbour Yacht squadron. Only Kelly and Molan appeared, running the gauntlet of about 100 demonstrators, mostly locals, who turned out in driving rain to protest the Liberals’ lack of climate change policy. Kelly delivered a full-throated critique of the left’s alleged myths of climate change and a defence of the fossil fuel industry, a tape obtained by the Guardian shows.
Under questioning from the moderator, Tim Blair, a rightwing columnist for the Daily Telegraph, the Liberal speakers warmed to the task of urging the party faithful to claim back the Liberal party from the dangerous moderates.
Bosi, a former SAS officer, has also spoken at events organised by the anti-Islam, anti-immigration group True Blue Crew. He has called on supporters to emulate the Trump phenomenon and “take back Australia”.
Article is worth the full read to just highlight how fucking insane some of these people are, the last thing we need is for the Liberal party to drag further right and start resembling something like the Republicans.
Seems like the Tea Party Republicans after Mitt Romney lost in 2012, I hope a repeat of the Trump takeover doesn't happen in Australia.
If they now trying losing their moderate members, Some them will joining Labour Party and Centre Alliance and may decrease a little bite or more in national polling opinion as result.
It wont, doing this will energize the old racists but there is not enough here. Liberals will dive in popularity by doing this.
The moderates are holding the party together in regards to popularity. As unlikeable as Bill Shorten is, he will blow universally hated Tony Abbott out of the water in regards to popularity.
How much sway does Tony have today? Wasn't he completely disgraced? How the hell does this man have any possible political capital left?
He's not disgraced among the right wing of the Libs. They genuinely believe the secret to winning and "beating the lefties" is by going further right. They're also super scared of losing votes to One Nation.
God he's a vile fucking gremlin.
I agree with Tones. They should push further to the right.
The Liberals will split into two and be utterly unelectable for a decade. Sounds good to me
Bunch of mongs who obviously didn’t learn from the latest Liberal leadership spill. The party overall still prefers moderates, hence how Morrison won the spill over Dutton. But that spill, which was pushed by Abbott, Dutton and the other conservatives, has caused irreversible damage for the Liberals at the next election.
If Tony Abbott is serious about pushing the conservative agenda, the best thing that he can do is just shut his bloody pie hole and accept that Australians are over him. He’s history.
Wait minute, Are they supposedly be in political coalition with National Party and some center-right Provincial and Territorial political parties? If so, It will be surprising see them losing members, seats and probably ending their coalition for first time.
Moderate and small-l liberals are not going to defect if the conservative push is successful. The Liberal Party has always been a party of multiple, competing factions. Same with Labor* (correct spelling). The conservatives were in the driving seat with Howard and Abbott, but the moderates have been in charge since Turnbull became PM.
The idea that Liberals would defect to the Centre Alliance is laughable. When Liberals do defect, they typically become independents.
Isn't my fault that most of all non-American Anglophones may used British spelling (instead of Latin-inspired spelling) of how they pronounced. In Australian case is may used some American/ pronunciation or by themselves.
That was majority case in your country's history but it rarely can happen if one of many moderate Ex-Liberal politicians can tell their disillusioned supporters in Liberal Party to may join Centrist party like Centre Alliance or not, It may depends on them having political free will in Instant-Runoff but semi-two party protected electoral system.
I feel like this is relevant somehow:

christ its like you need a constitutional amendment to force countries to recognize climate change and the need for government policy to reflect that, otherwise they'll just undo whatever laws you pass because it doesn't exist to them
Hm, I wonder if a new conservative liberals/nationals and One Nation coalition would snowball many votes using Trumpism.
That would be an unfortunate future
I doubt it, ultra conservative politics doesn't sell well here outside of deepest darkest Queensland and retirement homes
Id be willing to bet they would be a large voting base, just not quite large enough to win elections.
In Queensland, sure. That’s where all the crazy pollies come from. For people not from Australia: Queensland is the Florida of Australia, both in weather and the oldies and weirdos who live there
Hey fuck you
Youre right if ur thinking about where @Download is from, thats an absolute shit hole. But qld has fucken rich culture man, you should go on an inland road trip here and meet the locals.
Mt. isa gotta be my favourite people, mad respect for those cunts.
m8 all fucking Strayan culture is the same. Eating roast chicken on buns with pasta salad, doing big $$$ hits on More Chilli, and king punching people in the back of the head are all part of our national identity
trump is more comparable to xenophon or palmer as an anti-establishment candidate, and we've seen that happen multiple times in the last few elections. our parliamentary system rather then primaries and presidencies, mandatory voting, and preferences means it's a blip in the status quo instead of the shitshow you see in the US.
abbott is riding on the fact that his conservative faction was never properly trounced despite being too on-the-nose to even see a second election. it's dumb political maneuvering to make the public think the far-right is viable because it's obvious to everyone else he's a useless dickhead
what sort of sad cunt thinks this is true aussie culture
If every paint can in bunnings isnt behind locks ur in a pussy cunt neighbourhood and not true blue
fuck you i'm no queenslander
Ipswicher*
Theres a fucken difference
I'm 1600km from Ipswitch.
How is that not an oxymoron?
I honestly feel like Australian politics is a mix of British and American politics in how it infuses the generally distant and gentrified British political class with the insane rhetoric of the American system.
Oh, and this video is fairly relevant...

I'll fucking lol if Tony becomes the leader of the libs after they lose the election next year
Who the fuck lives in Ipswich then
Did you in the past?
Nah. Only been to Ipswitch one, when I was 12 or 13. I don't think we even stopped lol.
