Hello everybody,
I've spoken with garry and the video subforum won't be returning any time soon. Sorry. This is all the information I have.
To do the best with what we've got, I'd appreciate if you could use the below thread icon for videos to indicate the thread you're posting is a video
Gaming videos should go in the Games forum

That's alright, Hezzy - I appreciate you communicating with Garry on our behalf sometimes and I understand that you're not able to make adjustments, only really being able to voice the community's concerns.
Is there a reason Garry's like this or is it spite of some kind?
I think he wants to see how people adapt to the change, this isn't something that can be measured over weeks. I want everyone to post videos normally in General, if it gets clogged up then it would indicate to us that there is a need for a subforum. This isn't the case at the moment, although I understand that people stopped posting videos because the subforum had gone.
I think everyone here agrees that it sucks.
It is unfortunate, hence why we should do the best we can with what we have
Just to be clear, is this a suggestion, not a rule? I'd be sad to see people turned off from posting content, because they fear they might get banned for it being in the wrong section
Other times, when we wanted people to post a certain way or in a certain place, we made it into rules, banned people for not doing it. It stifled experimentation instead of allowing it to take place.
I'm subscribed to General, but not to Games, and I never ever browse it, but I enjoy some gaming videos. If someone posts one of them in General, I and others like me are more likely to see it, and enjoy it, and there's no harm done, so it'd be weird to see a ban, all I'm saying. I wanna ask that we just throw the idea out there and see if it works (or admit if it doesn't) without trying to micromanage it.
I also want to see how people react to change. Lets just delete all the subforums but general and have little icons next to the threads be the only way to differentiate them.
Also even though megathreads are the priority now lets lower the maximum page count to 20 since it's basically that low anyways
I think the reason people want the sub-forum back is more just because it'll be a little bit disorganised and eclectic to have videos in general. Sometimes, I really fancy watching a video, and it's just a bit easier if I can go to a sub-forum dedicated to it, that's all.
I'm not banning people for posting stuff in the wrong section anymore, people get notified when things are moved to different forums which I feel is sufficient notice
Seems a bit silly to put gaming content in a forum other than the gaming content forum. Games consists mainly of megathreads so you won't get swamped with notifications if you subscribe
Since a subforum isn't going to happen, being able to filter threads would be nice (unless you already can).
Remind me again why we moved back to the megathread model when having a subforum structure was beginning to work?
Thanks for the response, Hezzy.
As someone who do surf this forum, and needing to deal with this 'compression', I suggest putting ALL videos in general and tag them with [video].
DON'T PUT GAMING VIDS IN GAMES SECTION. I'd assume that few to none go to Games to watch videos, that forum is for people to discuss their favorite IP in particular.
For anyone just browsing for videos to watch, keep an eye out when skimming General.
I know you're trying to act like Garry's shit doesn't stink because he doesn't listen to logic or reasoning but the only thing that has come from this is that people are posting less content because Garry has made it less convenient to do so. And you've said that the only way to solve this problem is to straight up spam General with so much content that it becomes an unusable mess so that Garry will maybe consider giving us back the thing we had to begin with.
How about you ask him what possible benefit comes from removing the video subforum? If he can't think of an actual good reason beyond "i want to see how people adapt" then maybe it's a stupid idea and everybody hates it because it has no purpose. What does he actually expect? Why would he think that this is a positive change? Why would he think that this is a necessary one? What positive user behaviour could possibly come from this?
Can anybody think of a single good reason to get rid of the video subforum? A single, actual good one? One that defeats the immediate common sense logic of "this would be better if it were in the video subforum"?
That's fair enough. In that case I'd ask that people post the video in General and also in the relevant thread in Gaming
No need to use text tags if we use the proper thread icon
I'm sorry to hear that, but unfortunately that's the reality of the situation and there's nothing any of us can do to change that.
I just don't get why breaking what worked seemed like a good idea, and why hed completely ignore what entire community wants.
I get that you have no power over this hezzy but I just don't get why hed do this.
"We want Videos subforum back!"
"But it goes against MY ENVISION of the future of the forums."
I think Garry had seen enough of how we adapted to these changes - terribly. There is no reason for not bringing subforum back.
TBH I used to spend a lot of time in the videos subforum and since the change I've viewed maybe three video threads because it's such a pain to do so.
This "let's see what happens" mentality to justify really dumb decision-making is really tiresome and it's not worth it to jump through hoops to satisfy some guy who could care less anyway.
The people who browse for videos aren't necessarily the same who browse for franchise discussion megathreads. Ideally you are right, people with an ecletic taste in videos can subscribe to forums they normally wouldn't, and not worry too much about getting swarmed with notifications, IMO that's only workable because garry's constant gutting of communities has driven so much activity away.
I understand having to make do with what we got, and frankly it makes sense to spread videos according to topic, but I hope you understand that it makes way less sense than restoring the Videos forum. I know, I know, we're not getting it back, it's just the "reality of the situation" pitch would resonate more with people if you acknowledged that ideas like videos in the Games section, while reasonable, came about because of a decision that wasn't.
No, I suggest people still use the [VIDEO] tag in titles. Thread icons don't show up in the Latest tab, or the notifications tab, or "last post by".
If it doesnt get clogged up because the rate of posted threads drops to 1/10th will that be interpreted as this "working"?
The videos section was literally the most interesting subforum.
Can't wait to see GD get clogged with threads now.
you try your best love you hezzy
Why couldn't it just have been a forum software change instead of upsetting the ecosystem that was happily chugging along for years? I just don't get it.
Now that everyone wants it to be basically what it was before Garry throws a fit. Feels like over the years Facepunch has matured but Garry hasn't.
Man, this change is still so great. I love seeing like 3 videos on a page with other crap I don't care about.
Man, its so fucking great that someone who doesn't even use the forum and "grew out of it" doesn't listen to us lowly peasants. How dare we even suggest stuff.
Watch your tone you fucking depth-groveller. The all-seeing, all-knowing Garry Newverlord has decreed that the Videos and that Kind of Crap subforum is obsolescent, and you *will* like it whether you like it or not.

I mean you all post videos with [VIDEO] tag, you already have adapted and now video section is not coming baack
Yeah true I hadn't thought about that. I'll amend the OP
there is no reason to post videos since they'lll get buried.
the only time i ever stumble into a video is when it appears in the "most recent" section.
I hope you can also measure the amount of videos being posted compared to the videos section, feels like there's way less
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
