A $145 million contract has been awarded to start the construction of a border wall along the U.S. Mexico border in Texas.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract to construct about six miles of levee wall system in the Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley
sector in Hidalgo County, a CBP news release states
The project is being funded by a share of this year's appropriations to Customs and Border Protection. The contract was awarded to SLS Co. Ltd. on Wednesday, the release states.
Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2019. The project — dubbed RGV-03 — includes:
-Construction and installation of tactical infrastructure including a reinforced concrete levee wall to the height of the existing levee
-18 feet tall steel bollards installed on top of the concrete wall
-Vegetation removal along a 150-foot enforcement zone throughout the approximately six miles of levee wall system
The enforcement zone also will include detection technology, lighting, video surveillance, and an all-weather patrol road parallel to the levee wall, the release states.
"Once constructed, this levee wall system will serve as a persistent impediment to transnational criminal organizations, while still allowing river access for property owners, other
federal/state/local officials, local emergency responders, and USBP," the news release states.
145 million dollars for a six mile wall. Jesus Christ on a fucking bicycle.
$145 million for a $12-25 billion project. That's about 0.5-1% of the total estimated cost.
$145 million for six miles?
and what a fucking waste it already is
This isn't The Wall, this is A Wall, and just like The Wall, it will do nothing and be a massive waste of money, time, and resources.
So, the border between the US and Mexico is 1,945 miles and it will cost $145m to build 6 miles of it. 1,945 / 6 is 324, so that means the wall will cost $47bn. Nice.
the yell of a man screaming "We can't afford healthcare" can be heard far off in the distance
Healthcare is simply not important to the current administration.
you fools don't understand. the most powerful mexicans live behind that stretch of the border, and with this their magic will be sealed.
Technically if you scale up 145 to a 2000 mile wall, that's around 50 billion.
50 billion for a useless wall that doesn't do anything to protect the US border and is not more than a codpiece for the man in charge.
The wights are North of the wall, silly. They're the ones you need to be afraid of.
And it's not even a wall, it's a fucking fence.
Jesus bicycle-fucking Christ.
this has to be some kind of money laundering scheme or insurance fraud or something
prediction: one of trump's major campaign points will be that not reelecting him will mean the money spent on the wall (which will be 5% complete) will be totally wasted
MeXIcO Is GoNnA PaY FoR It
Trump thinks that this will be a lasting monument to his presidency. Honestly I agree with him.
In a decades time, after the next few administrations have abandoned funding the maintenance costs of the wall- this colossal waste of money will be a crumbling, rusted, ruin.
Like I said, a fitting monument.
We've already wasted so much time and money on this clown, and time can't be so easily replaced as money.
If he were to magically disappear tomorrow, I'd still call that a win.
Can we all make pilgrimages to it so we can all piss on it? I would very much like to visit THE WALL just to take a piss on his legacy. Hell, why stop there? A big diarrhea donkey dump on it would be pretty stellar too.
It's a shame that it looks like it's shaping up to be a shitty fence. If he actually got a wall built it would become something akin to a pilgrimage site for graffiti artists when it inevitably became abandoned.
People flocking to paint anti Trump punk artwork on what he imagined would be a lasting legacy.
It's big enough for a photo op, that's what matters
I mean like
I'm not a supporter of the wall, but this is a dumb point. $50 billion wouldn't even pay even 1/10th of a single year of the cost of Medicare.
I'm hoping for a 'Tear down this wall' moment in the future

look at all those mexicans jumping the existing border.
Wait Wait...
I thought this subject was forgotten and sweeped under the carpet by the GOP.
I can't believe they still think about fulfilling the wall promise. GOP truly are fucking morons, such a waste of money.
He said healthcare. Medicare isn't healthcare. It's a group of financial assistance programs that pay people's insurance providers using Federal funding
It may seem like a quibble, but it is a very meaningful and very important distinction to make, given the costs of Medicare, the financial assistance programs currently costing more billions annually than the US defense budget, are so frequently brought up as an example of it why it's just being too expensive to have functioning healthcare, something akin to the UK's NHS or your choice of government run healthcare system anywhere else in the world, within the United States
I've got it: annex Lithuania and use its resources to fund the project.
Imo, even calling it a fence might be a bit charitable.
Not even 50% of the budget will end up going towards the wall itself, calling it now
