https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/11/apples-t2-chip-will-block-some-third-party-repairs-of-new-devices/ Small repair shops and tech enthusiasts who attempt to fix their new Apple devices may be taking a serious risk in doing so. According to a report from The Verge, Apple confirmed that its new T2 security chip is designed to lock down devices after repair if it doesn't recognize certain authorized replacement parts. I think I just heard Louis Rossman get his war-face ready.
I won't be surprised if this is declared unlawful given recent rulings.
Like net neutrality, right to repair is something everyone but the corporations likes. Farmers are struggling dealing with computerized farm equipment they can't repair.
The T2 is cancer, FYI you can't even install Linux on any device that has one yet
hack the chip
Thanks capitalism
I'm not gonna ask how this is legal since apple already does shady things so who cares if they do it again and its probably in the lines of being "technically" legal therefore totally ok but go fuck yourself apple It would be so bad if they provided some good repair service in exchange for being a total dicks, but i guess its not business for apple if theyre not overcharging for the least amount of effort and service
It's a pathetic world where even a simple potato peeler is built to break. My neighbor has a potato peeler from eons ago, still works perfectly. She told me everytime she buys a new one it wears out very quickly.
Illegal now.
Yeah I'm glad they probably can't get away with their odd shoot your reputation in the foot strategy of making third party repair impossible/borderline punishable and then making your first party repairs absolute AIDS. It doesn't even seem like good business, but most people who buy Apple will buy Apple regardless of how AIDS their aftercare is or how bad their reputation becomes. Talk about a cornered market. If the Chinese did this with Huawei we'd all drop it like a fireball.
