In its order list released Tuesday morning, the Supreme Court said it would take up an appeal from the House GOP and asked the parties to file briefings on whether Republican leaders have standing to challenge the lower court's ruling. Though it appeared the 2019 House elections would take place under a redrawn map, the new Supreme Court proceedings raise the possibility that the existing map will still be in place for next year. The Supreme Court has already heard the case once, ruling in 2017 that a district court used a flawed legal standard when it upheld the map as constitutional. After reconsidering the case with a narrower standard, the three-judge panel found that state lawmakers improperly prioritized race to draw African-American voters into 11 majority-minority districts. A redrawn map could tilt partisan control of the House, where Republicans currently hold a 51-49 majority after losing 15 seats to Democrats in 2017. The lower court ordered the General Assembly to draw a new map by Oct. 30, but it became clear that Republicans could not pass a map that Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, would sign. Last month, the court appointed its own expert to redraw the House map and set a deadline of March 28 for the enactment of a new map. The precise schedule for the new Supreme Court proceedings was not immediately clear Tuesday, but the case is expected to be heard in the spring. The Supreme Court order doesn't automatically halt the lower court's proceedings, but Republicans may ask for the process to be put on hold as their appeal continues.
dont worry guys, its not like the president has stacked the supreme court with far-right psychopaths or anything
Currently racial gerrymandering is 100% illegal, if they let this gerrymandered map go by the next Dem needs to pack the court or force Trump's picks to resign.
I swear to go if this goes 5-4 because of fucking Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.
Fuck the supreme court tbqh. Gov. Northam should set a precedent of ignoring this farce of a court. Maybe other states will follow suit. There needs to be consequences when the courts are so obviously stacked on political lines: it delegitimizes the authority of that court
It's illegal, but all the court needs to do is say it isn't happening in the first place and none of the laws about it matter.
Trump would just arrest Northam for treason or whatever bullshit he can think of, maybe federalize the National Guard.
I'd like to see him try
Refusing to acknowledge SCOTUS is very dangerous, red states would then deny abortions, and civil rights, and become faux democracies without the courts making them hold somewhat fair elections.
Until they can be properly impeached, there must be an effort to recuse Gorsuch and Kavanaugh from every case the Supreme Court hears.
There's no way they can until 2022 since there's no way Democrats can get 60 seats in 2020, and then impeaching two justices right before 2024 would look really bad.
I dont see why my state should suffer because a bunch of dipshits in Idaho and Alabama are given way too much fucking political representation, and their fucking criminal of a president gets to hand down edicts with absolutely unchecked authority over everyone else. The supreme court, federalism, and the constitution can suck my fucking cock
They already do that.
They would become fascist dictatorships, non-whites being shot, women being freely abused, lynchings.
its not though. The court has allowed majority minority districts on multiple occasions as only requiring more intense scrutiny, and the bar for qualifying is very low since you can make the argument its just a partisan gerrymander, not that that should even be legal though.
Then fuck it, the next Democrat president needs to surround the Supreme Court building with the military and don't let Roberts, Alito, Gorsuch, or Kavanaugh out of the building until they send letters of resignation. They were appointed by illegitimate presidents.
or just instead bump up the scotus count so its less likely that the court will break 5/4 on everything.
I feel that's extremely unlikely, Pelosi and Schumer still want to play by the rules.
the entire nomination process needs overhauled, we've been fighting these battles for 60 years and its only gotten progressively worse. There is no minority rights in the process anymore and only extremists get nominated
