phwoar the dragon statue cutscenes look so fuckin smooth
I really, really love how this game looks. The amount of work put into the dragon statues alone is mindboggling. Glad to see that the performance is generally good as well.
The dragons are a definite highlight for me. That said while I appreciate how damn good the new one looks, I think I prefer the original art style. That's just because I've developed a thing for low poly though, and Spyro is artistically one of the best looking games of that era.
With all the pixel-nostalgia games out there it honestly baffles me that someone haven´t made a game that plays on Playstation-style graphics nostalgia.
While I love the remake overall and think the design of the dragons are fantastic I honestly think the actual animation leaves a lot to be desired. It has the same problem as the Crash remake, namely being way too busy and afraid of staying still. Here is a fun drinking game; watch for when a dragon makes the swing-arm-for-emphasis motion, you will get plastered in no time.
I also did not really like the decision to make the beast maker dragons hicks, the lore has them more as primordial creatures of life (altough a few of them did have hick accents/names).
I think that low poly is likely to become the next pixel art, we're likely to see it boom maybe in the next 2-3 years. I've seen a lot of models made by aspiring indie devs on Twitter, and damn it can look incredible. It looks particularly good in horror, because you can use that combined with fog and the ol' PSX wobble system to generate a feeling of intense unease. On the plus side, integrated graphics on new CPUs are probably going to be able to handle a fair bit of low poly 3D gaming too (bearing in mind that RPi 2 can do PS1 emulation), meaning the bar for entry for titles like this are theoretically quite low.
