• H3H3 Adresses criticism, honestly

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO95NQb-DcU I would like to share this, because I've been a critic of Ethan and the whole show and I have asked questions and I have found answers in this video that have made me think.
As someone who honestly doesn't give a shit about Ethan in general, the title "Why does everyone hate H3H3?" seems incredibly disingenuous. Really comes off as him continuing to brush aside any criticism by implying that it's not his fault, but the viewers' fault. Also, when your description has four fucking links to your sponsors in it, it only comes off as incredibly shallow, and sure doesn't help his case any.
I don't read the title as that at all, it's referring to the recent spike of criticism, it's the topic of the podcast. I don't really give a shit about Ethan either, but I think it's interesting to see a youtuber go through this thing and how they deal with and I personally feel like he did a very good job in this podcast episode. It doesn't make me wanna watch his content any more but he makes a lot of good points about doing the whole youtube thing.
I got a diamond for whoever has a comprehensive tl;dw of this 2 hour video.
So I'll post a bit of a TLDR from the other thread, his response is only about 45 minutes: So i listened to all 45ish minutes of him talking about the recent videos, issues, etc. and general thoughts on the recent controversies. It felt...I don't know hard to characterize. I saw lots of very sincere moments, and some not so much. I feel really bad for him that he has to deal with the severe depression, and everything that comes with it. I'm in no position to understand how hard that must be. I'm glad he's getting help and taking the prescribed medicine, and that it's helping. On the other hand, there were a couple things that felt off, mainly the way Hila reacted to everything. She barely said a word for 45 minutes other than "ahuh" and "yea", and at the end of her husband bared his emotions to the world, and ready to take all the criticism that it'll no doubt bring, he asked her what she thought. She just goes, "uh. good." Like...is that really all you can say? It makes it seem like there is absolute no support system at home, at least from her side if that's all you can muster in the moment. Even a "I'm proud of you for coming out with your emotions" or "you did great." Another thing that maybe Ethan doesn't understand is that the "hate" isn't actual personal hate towards him. He stated multiple times, "People either hate or love me" and it's not that they hate you, you missed the point of the recent vids. They hate what you've turned into, and hate the way you've treated other people. I think almost all the criticism videos have acknowledged that they're not character assassinations and rather an analysis into his changed behavior, and they're raising concern for him. So i still don't know if he listened to them, or really reflected as much. Although again I understand with the underlying depression, and he mentioned briefly a couple times that his issues with dealing with criticism step from his childhood, and that's about it. Also irked me that he didn't apologize at all for his behavior and how he treated some people. It's great to acknowledge wrongdoing but one step further of 'I'm sorry to those I've hurt or insulted" goes a long way I think. Overall though, I think he did great in this video. He bared his emotions, didn't throw a tantrum or meltdown and kinda put it all out there so its a good step in the right direction. Acknowledging there's a problem and facing is the first step. I hope he continues to get the help he needs and continues to improve and to take criticism as a form of learning. That was from last night. However with the points above, as well as others made in the other thread it does seem like this is not his first "apology" rodeo. It's getting more difficult for me to see this as sincere.
Ethan talks about how poorly he has been dealing with criticism, or in some ways not been dealing with it, about depression and anti depressants, how it all has affected his channel and videos, about the podcast itself. Hila chimes in every now and then, but mostly let's Ethan explain it all which makes sense. It's not a "defensive" talk, though some will undoubtedly think it is.
i stopped caring about ethan because hes going the way of boogie and wont keep his mouth shut about politics
Maybe it makes me sound rude to say it but it feels like he's hiding behind the depression defense that this point. Like, don't get me wrong, depression sucks and works differently for everyone, but i don't let my severe depression turn me into an asshole or keep me from trying to be the best person i can be nor does anyone else i know.
A diamond to whoever tl;dr this down to 2 sentences
I've only watched the first 21 minutes, but he made it pretty clear at one point that his personal issues, like being unable to take criticism, were what caused the depression, not the other way around. I found it very sincere, actually.
never watched this guy but as far as i can tell fp used to like him but now doesn't. why?
Hila is fucking weird and I genuinely don't know how people could regularly listen to a podcast with her, she literally just goes "Yep, hi, Okay" and various other reaction statements instead of saying anything substantial
I mean, yeah that's shitty I guess, but I doubt he was thinking about how he was going to include his sponsors in the video while he was saying all of that. Anyway the important part of my post was correcting the idea that he's blaming it all on his depression, which he explicitly explained that he is not. I think it's good that he's being open about it all, and that he's trying to improve.
Well no, but I wouldn't put my girlfriend who literally says nothing on my podcasts on the regular. Like, every clip of the podcast I've ever seen has her not even be an entity in it.
Ethan explains away his behavior with his depression, which he claims is being treated professionally, while Hila sits there like a vegetable and offers generic responses to all queries thrown her way. While Ethan seems to understand that his behavior has been less than stellar and that he needs to change if he wants to keep viewership up, he doesn't seem to offer any plan of contingency or really address the individual criticisms being levied in a meaningful and compelling way; all the while, Hila is the same prop she's always been, adding next to nothing to what was already a frankly boring watch.
A few 'yeahs' and 'uh, good' are basically Hila's MO at this point, but I think she was just letting Ethan say his piece, and she obviously cares, because she was on the verge of tears when he was saying how Ethan could be rude to her at home. I've been severely depressed with several suicide attempts, and I can tell you it's brutal. It never went away for me, even with antidepressants, although I think mirtazapine is the best in terms of minimal side effects, being comparable to the best antidepressants in double-blind studies and also helping significantly with sleep if your depression if depression is co-morbid with insomnia. Minor criticism of the podcast, but most SRIs/SSRIs don't block serotonin receptors - they inhibit serotonin's uptake, with fluoxetine and many other antidepressants also having quite a lot of agonism(upward forcing) on the 5-HT2a and 5-HT2c receptors. Whilst acid does also work on these receptors, it's not at all comparable on changing people, and that's probably ideal, because in my darkest moments, I doubt LSD would have been great for my mental well-being.
As short as I can make it: He used to make fun of cringy content, got bigger when he started calling out soulless money-making youtubers. His stuff was low-key and low-budget, just him in front of a camera, Hila off-screen, and every now and then, footage of the channel he's riffing on. At one point, there was a lawsuit from a dipshit they'd made fun of. They won, but it drained their time and money. It was a shitty situation, many people say it's what derailed their content and made Ethan so cynical. Personally I felt they were already getting tired before it happened, but maybe it's hindsight Flash forward to today, and after a string of wacky videos, Ethan got truly big (as far as YT is concerned). Way more promos, a shitty mobile game with microtransactions themed after h3h3, some weird as fuck models in Payday 2 apparently (??) but I never heard too much about that. He gave up his old format for a lazy podcast, where he reads from a google doc script while Hila sits there like a potted plant. Does not deviate from the script even if the guests directly tell him that it makes them uncomfortable (see Bill Burr, Jontron), and sometimes asks questions tailor-made to shame them. Basically comes off like the soulless money-makers he used to make fun of
