Why would you think they don't give a shit? They've got to have valid reasons for leaving their player base behind in a sea of TF2 hats.

Jokes aside, it's likely they wanted to make the next Half-Life an industry-shaping release, as the first and second games were. Over time, the pressure to create an amazing game had increased and they just weren't able to deliver. I seriously doubt that they don't care about Half-Life or the fans - quite the opposite to be honest, which makes the whole situation even shittier.
