• Heysham 1: Three hurt in nuclear plant accident

Three people have been injured in a serious incident at a nuclear power plant in Lancashire. Power company EDF, which owns Heysham 1 power station, said the employees were taken to hospital following an "accidental steam release". The BBC understands one person suffered burns, one a broken hip and the other a broken back. EDF said Monday night's incident was not related to the nuclear process and there was no danger to public safety. The casualties were said to be conscious and speaking when they were taken to hospital. Five fire crews attended the incident at 22:40 GMT and remained at the site for more than two hours as a precaution. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-lancashire-46275104
sounds like a high pressure steam pipe burst, not something that we should be routine but its not something that's serious
Not really any more newsworthy than any other work-related accident. I hope they recover well, steam burns are no joke.
I hope people don't try and use this incident to justify (without any reading on their part) why nuclear energy is bad. I hope for a speedy recovery for those hurt in the incident.
oh boy here comes the anti-nuclear shit. Not here on FP, but I mean in general. But they always forget about the coal miners who's bodies are fucked and lives shortened or the entire city that's on fire underground from a coal mine or the millions of animals killed in oil spills
Another of these: "Incident at nuclear power plant" "Janitor fell of ladder while replacing light bulb"
For what I understand there was another incident at Heysham a couple years back, again, not something to worry about in and of itself, but if something big did happen, given my proximity to the the site its not like I'll be around to experience Fallout: North Lancashire edition.
Indoctrination is a thing sadly.
Can't find in the article where this makes Elon Musk look good...
I don't understand the anti-nuclear stuff. It's basically our only longterm solution, and blessed be, its almost perfectly clean. And it's my understanding that modern reactor designs can happily burn what was once nuclear waste, and we have a sufficient supply of raw and waste material above ground that we wouldn't have to mine anything for a millennia if we mass converted to nuclear. Now im the first in line to defend the concept of clean coal as an unabashed steam power shill (all hail L Porta), but as a primary power supply source, i don't understand how anyone could think that there's even a contest.
Because it gives off Radiation and we've been told Radiation is really bad and that if something has even a chance of giving off Radiation, get it out of here. It's fine for shit like Coal though that craps up the atmosphere and can make it toxic to breath, but noo, it's not Radiation.
Coal has actually released more radioactive waste into the environment than nuclear.
Oh shit yeah, it does too, wow. These big companies are arseholes, I have no doubt they're completely aware of the problems caused by what they do, they just don't give a fuck because it gets them money.
