Is Steam really a good alternative to patreon? Some of these porn devs are making hundreds of thousands a year off of donations alone.
I think the cases are different. If you have a lot of people willing to donate to your Patreon then you'd use Patreon. Otherwise if you don't have that kind of exposure yet I would start on Steam where millions potentially have access to your game ("potentially" since IIRC viewing AO games is an opt-in).
First they need to put a bit more effort into actually moderating what gets submitted(yeah, I know......). It's bad enough that every other day my Steam Queue is mostly "15/9 tile/jigsaw/minesweeper template with naked cartoon tits". Imagine how much worse it would be trying to find adult games that have actual effort put into them in the sea of no effort cash in attempts.
It's hard to tell how many people even know about the option to opt in. But one thing is for sure is that there are a ton of games being put on steam. If I were an artist though I think I would try patreon first because it might be easier to get people to try a free game and (hopefully) donate instead of trying to fight the dozens of hentai games getting released each week.
I mean, its not different now with the flood of shovelware currently flooding steam now. It's just going to be double.
Steam probably figures if someone buys it they are still making a buck off of it. Gabe has said multiple times he would rather steam be open with no moderation where the user has the option to buy whatever he wants even if it means he might by a pile of shit so I doubt things will change.
