Fuck off Spain you're not getting it and you're not getting control over it
It's not exactly like Spain recognises referendums regarding independence/not being part of Spain.....
2075
The risen seas of the world batter the coastline as the two armies meet. The British Army, having finally got a break from overseeing the 235th episode of the Brexit talks, stands forth in front of their rival, the Spanish. Years of budget cuts mean that the two are in a stalemate, Gibraltar now turned into a trench. As in, the entire thing. Its pretty nasty.
"Well since we're never going to get over this I suggest a deal"
"And what would that be, Engleesh?"
"You take this rock and we take Catalonia"
"Oh ok yeah sure"
The rock is British soil, Spain ain't getting it.
Nah nah nah don't drag me into that
Its not British soil, its Gibraltan soil
The entire issue is because that Spain, just like Argentina today (however i do know a very large amount of argies don't care or support us britbongs in the island debate), is ignoring the will of the Gibraltans yet again and trying to pin it on Britain.
In fact they're shooting themselves in the foot, if they actually achknoweldged the Gibraltans as their own people and said "Why don't you join us instead? Or perhaps work with us" instead of "FUCK YOU YOU'RE BRITISH SPIES YOU'RE SUCKING ON OUR ECONOMY REE" they'd actually get somewhere.
So this isn't a case of "OH RIGHT SPAIN COME ON LETS GO FALKANDS 2.0" because
A. Spain is in NATO
B. Spain and Britain don't want war and probably can't afford it ethier on both sides
Why is everything so fucking stupid?!
Gibraltar voted overwhelmingly to keep things as it is so this is just spain flexing its strength.
Ask the monkeys first, they're the actual rulers there

"After my conversation with Theresa May, our positions remain distant. My Government will always defend the interests of Spain. If there are no changes, we will veto Brexit."
hoo boy
Ah, I was already wondering if this was going to be the first year without getting into problems with Gibraltar like every single other year
TBH is a legit issue ( with the UK leaving the EU, Gibraltar transforms into an international isolated territory, which complicates the everyday flux of people and stuff by having to place again border checks ), but why parts of our politicians are so obsessed with getting a bunch of rocks backs baffles us.
Also Spain fucking up international relationships because we don't want any examples that Catalonia or other regions can use as excuse ( we still don't recognize Kosovo, for example ) is an all time classic.
I prefer to them to be still part of the UK but with a special treaty so the movement of people, as if they become independient you can count on our country harassing them until they pledge to our flag.
The sole problem I have with them is that is just another tax heaven region of Europe, which IDK for what we are waiting for to combat them.
What I'm not reading anywhere and that is an equally important issue is: what happens with all the retired people living in Spain and other places of Europe? They will lose their retierement payment? will have their "colonies" to become independient?
Long story short is the UK hasn't thought about any of that stuff in regards to citizens living abroad.
I have UK Citizenship but I am also a Dutch resident (I also have German citizenship so I'm protected either way) but there is a fairly large proportion of British expats in the Netherlands, some retirees but most of them being ex-students who found work and decided to stay here.
The UK has not offered any kinda advice to UK citizens here. The Dutch government has tried their best to help these people (who, again, are NOT their own citizens) but the UK has paid almost zero attention to them and a lot of people have no idea if they are going to be allowed to stay in the country where they have built a career and, in some cases, family.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
Historically it was British soil (as part of treaties in 1714-16) as Economical/Naval import and was symbol of beginning of British Empire before released it as "Overseas" Territory like remaining country who don't fully independence from UK despite being the clearly only political entity that Britain control in Europe outside of British Isles and because like any former territory or colony its settlers become their own identity you mentioned.
However with Falkland Islands because their citizens retain their descendant cultural identity and fifty or hundred miles away from Argentinan mainland to make justified, Gibraltarians are instead hybridized their culture with their only neighboring nation with their Language (Spanish and their own Llanito), Religion (Predominantly Roman Catholic) and few other elements while half retaining their original descendants Anglo-Britishness.
Isn't Spain tanking Brexit actually working for Gibraltar's interests though since they did vote almost completely remain....
Has there ever been a point in time where Spain didn't want to rule fucking everything?
When Muslims ruled it.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Nope can't try pulling that card.
Spain won't be doing that to try and help Gibraltar get into the EU
It wants to take over its government.
*cough*

Sorry, It sadly your PM has give Spanish has now control Gibraltar political power in Brexit deal. And become a European equivalent to Hong Kong for short time.
"The news was met with anger by politicians across the political spectrum. The Liberal Democrat’s Brexit spokesman, Tom Brake MP, said: “The prime minister has caved in once again. In a desperate bid to get her disastrous deal across the line, May appears to have cast the people of Gibraltar aside.
“She has conceded that Gibraltar won’t necessarily be covered by a future trade deal, simply another example of why what she has negotiated is completely unacceptable. She has left the status of Gibraltar in jeopardy.
“This is a day of shame. The only way to sort out this chaos would be through a People’s Vote, with the option to remain in the EU”.
Labour’s MEP for Gibraltar, Clare Moody, said: “What is remarkable is that Theresa May has gone to Brussels to concede further text at this stage, before we’ve even left.”
The Conservative MP, Andrew Bridgen, said: “It appears that there is no-one the prime minister will not betray to achieve her sell-out deal”.
Amid the growing outcry over the concession, the prime minister, insisted that nothing had changed over the UK’s territorial claim to Gibraltar, as she visited Brussels on Saturday night for meetings with EU officials, including European commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker.
May also dismissed claims from Spain’s foreign minister that the agreement on the Rock had been a victory for Madrid delivering a treaty that was “the most important one since the Utrecht Treaty of 1713”, which had handed the territory to the British.
May said: “The UK’s position on the sovereignty of Gibraltar has never changed and will not change.
“I’m proud Gibraltar is British and I will always stand by Gibraltar. The UK’s position on Gibraltar has not changed and will not change.
“We have negotiated on behalf of Gibraltar, they are covered by the whole withdrawal agreement and by the implementation period. In the future we will continue to negotiate on behalf of the whole UK family and that includes Gibraltar. I’m proud Gibraltar is British I will always stand by Gibraltar.”"
What?
The Spanish don't control Gibraltar what are you talking about
She hasn't given them territorial control because that's borderline impossible, she's instead forfeited their economy, as it would need to be agreed by Spain on a Spain/Gibraltar trade agreement.
Yes to the first point but no to the second. Yes, the PM has given Spain veto power over the trade deal that concerns Gibraltar, but Hong Kong was on a 99-year lease from China - that is not happening. If you're talking about Hong Kong today with "two systems, one country", then it's completely different.
I think saying May has forfeited Gibraltar's economy with that language implies totality, but veto power on the trade deal is likely not going to amount to large changes. It's really dumb that this has happened, yeah, but you make it sound like there are going to be sweeping changes, whereas Spain will likely find themselves investing a great deal of time and energy into a tiny part of the UK that has a pretty small economy, and they'll find themselves in an even worse position than Britain does with Brexit right now.
