Well maybe humanity needs a massive cataclysmic kick in the ass before we get our shit together.
Venus, here we come!
But it's cold outside
The last cataclysmic kick in the ass was less than a hundred years ago, it was so bad that it only ended after the deployment of nuclear weapons, and people are already forgetting the lessons we should've learned from it. At this point, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that nothing short of extinction will ever make humanity get its shit together.
Even when tens of millions are dying and many countries are waging climate/resource-related wars a few decades from now, the big companies will still be doing their best to make a profit out of it.
They'll be making the weapons. Once an ethically bankrupt opportunist, always an ethically bankrupt opportunist.
I wanted to live to a hundred but guess I'm killing myself in about a decade.
But why? Sure, an insanely large amount of people are going to die, but there will be survivors. Why not at least try to make things better for future civilization?
When civilization goes poof all the easily accessed fuels and materials will have been used up, I don't see how we could get anywhere close to where we are now really ever again. But the main reasons is that I'm a lazy coward and climate change never fails to make me extremely bitter and depressed.
"This is just climate alarmist scare mongering!" "Climate conspiracy looking for more research money I see!" "Why isn't any money put towards scientists who want to disprove global warming!" "20 years ago climate scientists said ______ river was going to dry up, but it's still here isn't it?" "2 degrees over 50 years, great, I like warm weather" "It was the coldest winter on record in ______ town this year, so much for global warming hoax!" Worst thing about climate skepticism in the west is that it will take a long time for some sort of causational retribution because we're so insulated from environmental disasters. It's people in third world countries who will be completely fucked first, wheras people here have the bought and paid for luxury of stupidity.
Try to think of it in a more abstract way. Generally, as society evolves, we improve our ability to shape and mold energy/matter (it's essentially the same thing). We already know a society that isn't heavily reliant on fossil fuels is doable.
And that'll be the legacy we leave behind if humanity doesn't pull its collective heads out of their collective asses. We really need to find a way to cut out the trash parts of humanity before they bury us.
Do your plans include a massive self-sufficient estate?
Less than two hundred years of industrialization, folks! Hope you didn't like your kids, because they're in for The Suck, and their kids are in for The Big Suck.
In a hundred years organized agriculture might be literally impossible.
We got here with the help of Fossil Fuels. The question is could society reboot without the help of readily abundant and energy rich fossil fuels (ie going straight to wind turbines and solar panels and other clean energy systems). I think the answer is, maybe. We won't have the explosive growth we experienced during the industrial revolution. Instead it will be a slow grind to get to the technologies required to produce clean energy systems in quantities high enough to support a society.
100 years ago, typing a post on a forum to share in an instant with the world was impossible. I also could fly in a metal tube to go slap you for being a baby. We could all die in a freak meteor tomorrow. Or we can last until the heat death of the universe. But fuck it, things look scary man.
It'll result in mass migration which will affect us and probably fuel right-wing nationalism further.
The stupid part is most of these idiots are like 50-70 years old. They're more than old enough to have noticed the effects themselves. I mean fuck, I'm only 30 and even I can notice the effects. The weather in the last ten years is notably different than the weather in my first ten years of life.
Overpopulation is one ic the key factors. China vs india vs Pakistan. Let's go.
Should we start building underground bunkers?
Why exactly would you do that? The world isn't going to physically end
Yeah, I sure can't wait for 3 nuclear armed powers with a volatile history to enter resource wars!
That's no fun
Cross posting: If you want to be really depressed, I was doing a (site-wide) reddit search for Climate Change a few days back and saw that someone on r/The_Donald had posted this. https://www.reddit.com/r/The_Donald/comments/9zttm3/umm_fox_news_really_is_becoming_left_wing_their/ The comment section is just as awful... (bolded emphasis is mine) they have a entire climate change category just like a far left website would.... https://www.foxnews.com/category/us/environment/climate-change
But wait, you can lock yourself in a vault even right now and pretend there's an apocalypse! Then you'll be more ready than anyone if it does happen for any reason
If you think overpopulation is the problem, you should do your part to help and kill yourself
Is anybody else terrified? It's like locked inside an oven and there's a countdown to thanksgiving on the wall now
Even if we do survive (we will), worst case scenario we're sent back to a 17th century lifestyle. Society collapses and we don't have the resources for another industrial revolution and 200 years of technological progress. So civilization as a whole regresses to the Colonial era and never advanced again. Sounds incredibly depressing to me.
