And this is why you will never see an openly gay character in a major Hollywood blockbuster. Because that would without a doubt result in it being banned from release by China's homophobic government, and no major studio in hollywood is willing to pass on hundreds of millions of dollars of possible ticket sales.
The government of China needs a metaphorical bullet in the head.
Why do totalitarian governments hate homosexuals so much? If it's a religious theocracy, they're anti-homosexuality. If it's questionably religious like fascists, they're anti-homosexuality. For strict anti-religious totalitarian governments like Stalinist Russia and China, they're anti-homosexuality. Why is this always a thing?
You could ask the same question about why so many different groups of people hate jews.
Hate is a powerful political tool and easy to utilize against minorities
Look at how Trump got elected
*becomes the boss of all prisioners*
My best guess is because homosexual or other minorities go against an idea the goverment is trying to push. For example: In post-revolutionary Cuba, homosexual men and women faced persecution, harassment and discrimination because they went against the value and idea of the "new man/ revolution man" (I can't recall the exact term, to be honest, read an article 3 years ago about this topic). We can extrapolate this to today's China.
The article states "In 2016, the Chinese government banned depictions of homosexuality on television as part of a cultural crackdown on “vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content". I'm unsure if the chinese goverment is trying to create a "perfect citizen model" or something like that, but a repression against those values should ease the field if they decide to enact an idea like that in the future.
It's also an extension of ideas from China's past. It's kind of how like a lot of privations from the Tsarist system continued under new names once Stalin took over. Old systems die hard
did you really just conflate yaoi and boy's love? they're pretty different...
Totalitarian governments demand conformity and homosexuals and other smaller groups which might 'rock the boat' go against that value.
When the government wants control over the minutiae of your identity because they've decided that one 'model' of citizen is the most useful and productive, deviation is rarely appreciated.
Yaoi is literally the first thing that comes up when I google "Boys Love" (thanks for making me google that for clarification by the way)
I'm pretty out of the loop of this weird hentai anime stuff but is this a joke I don't get
...and now video games such as Rainbow Six: Siege are doing the same thing.
I think they just hate non-conformity. Weirdly, one of the most authoritarian governments in history under Genghis Khan actually had proper religious freedom.
At the time of Genghis Khan in the 13th century, virtually everyreligion had found converts, from Buddhism to Eastern Christianity and Manichaeanism to Islam. To avoid strife, Genghis Khan set up an institution that ensured complete religious freedom, though he himself was a Shamanist.

Still, on the whole, dictatorships tend to yield to biases of the masses. Perhaps this is so their power lasts longer or because they feel these things themselves and want to exert social influence. It's difficult to say.
Gonna say they're pulling things out of their ass.
I always learned that yuri is a translation of "girls' love" and yaoi as "boys' love".
Wikipedia agrees with my interpretation. Blurred out the Japanese spellings just to make the point more immediately legible.

the world needs to stop being friends with china
"Yaoi" refers to doujin generally, and BL encompasses all mlm material I believe, at least in Japan. In the West, people will debate the meaning. "Yaoi = BL" vs "Yaoi = just porn" vs whatever in the West is kind of a meaningless argument when they're Japanese terms anyway.
Because moralism tends to not just survive but thrive in these countries, with or without religion. Stalin's morals came from the church he outlawed, China protects its traditional values (and even
religions) from foreign ideas, South Korea has the same sexual taboos that North Korea does (but with less severe punishments), and almost no government in Latin America questions the authority of
the Catholic church, at least in public.
tbh i just used yaoi because it sounds funnier than boy's love
We're not all connoisseurs like you
We need a yaoi fanfic starring Xi Jumping and Winnie the Pooh. With explicit hot and sexy lovemaking involving several jugs of honey.
is there any reason to even pursue creative art as a Chinese citizen anymore? The moment you write or draw any titties you are liable to go to jail.
Didn't someone post this article last week?
Someone needs to write yaoi smut about Xi Jinping getting it on with Winnie the Pooh.
That makes way too much sense to the point where it fucking hurts
Honestly I don't think this is worth debating ITT
It's pretty awkward that you're wording it as if it's obvious tbh
The same has to be done for Saudi Arabia, but it won't happen unless all greedy megalomaniacs just die.
