Grab your bingo cards everyone
So um, besides the hilariously shitty source, is there actually anything wrong with having a national ID card ?
my favorite part of dumb americans not wanting a national id card is now we have to use a number that has no security safeguards at all for identification
I don't understand why this is a big deal, I thought most countries had mandatory ID cards these days? It always weirded me out that Americans had to use a drivers license or passport as proof of their identity
Dont know, having a convenient card to speed up paperwork and customs security processes sounds like some french globalist conspiracy to me.
Ya a lot of states waited till the last minute to begin phasing in the new license requirements. My state just began it and people aren't exactly happy they have to wait two weeks for a license in the mail (they give you a temporary paper license)
I love how she goes scaremongering about the GOVERNMENT having your FACE AND INFORMATION in this DATABASE...while she uses an iPhone X with facial recognition.
Also, as someone who lives in a country with mandatory ID, I can confirm that I live in a complete and utter dystopia.
"Prove me wrong", I've heard that many times in reality. I know a guy who's massively into conspiracy theories of pretty much every kind (ancient aliens, NWO, hollow earth, time travel, scifi movies being real technology, and tons of other dumb shit). And when you try to use science and logic to prove him wrong he doesn't believe it because "mainstream" science is a scam/plot/conspiracy etc. There isn't any way to argue with these kind of people since they're already entrenched into their insane beliefs and have conspiracy youtube videos playing on their TV and computer 24/7.
Okay so if I understand this correctly, Americans don't actually have a national ID card and the only form of ID they have that isn't driving license is a social security number with no secure elements for identity verification? And switching to proper national IDs is bad in what way?
I'm actually surprised that the US didn't go even a step further and roll out electronic IDs that serve as a smart card. In Slovakia, eID cards basically allow you to digitally sign stuff and communicate with government offices from home, are able to serve as digital wallets for buying bus tickets and can even serve as a mifare card for gaining entry to facilities without the need of carrying additional card.
We dont use our SS Cards as IDs
We have Drivers Licence IDs and Regular ID's that just show who you are (donor, height, etc information)
Did the mods begin allowing fake news threads in here? If so, I have a whole backlog of The Onion and HardTimes articles I would like to share
But even then not all US citizens have drivers licenses, its not universal as compared to Social Security. And arguably the stuff that SS gets you (signing up for bank accounts, loans, credit score, mortgages, jobs, etc.) are leagues more important than the smaller stuff that a DL gets you. And DLs have better inbuilt security.
For the initiated, this is a reason why Social Security as Identification is asking for trouble (and arguably why identity theft is more prevalent in the US):

Big difference between fake news and joke news too tho. OP is not trying to convince people with this here. Depends on the context. Dont know if jokes news were allowed but the website is probably falling apart soon anyway so.
Last time I checked, The Onion started making more sense than actual news articles/tv.

But besides that, I didnt know "the Real ID" thing existed. Some people probably didnt know about this transition to having a new ID that can cause you to have restrictions if you didnt get it.
This is America, lots of people there vehemently want to restrict the involvement of democratic institutions with checks and balances, but see no issue with letting elite-controlled corporations get away with anything.
Man, I wish I had gotten stuck with these kinds of conspiracy theorists at my old work place. Batshit insane, but in an almost adorable kind of way. Instead I got stuck with the ones who were solely into racist, alt-right, Alex Jones fueled conspiracies. I had to quit said job due to anxiety-induced health issues back in 2017 (which my lunatic co-workers were contributing to), but I wouldn't doubt at this point that they're fully on the Qanon train.
One other hilarious thing is that pretty much almost any data an ID would list is likely already public in some other database you can look up in the US.
There is also probably some "federal database" already as well.
USA is always amazes me when it comes to scaremongering about doing things on a national scale.
Who am I to talk though, living in my national ID, face database, tracked everywhere hell of country. /s
My best friend refused to vote because she said she needed to re-register to do that and said they post your address online and didnt want that information public.
I understand her worries though because one of her ex-bfs tried to kidnap her and she has a restraining order against him. Shes's since moved away and I wouldnt put it past him to try to look her up and go do something crazy.
I'm just glad that some guy I met once who thought space-walk footage was filmed in a swimming pool (with a video for "proof") after showing him how the "bubble" that was floating away from an astronaut doing work on the ISS was actually a washer.
you have to pay more for it, and now my state id card can't even get me between states, which is fucking stupid
You also need to bring at least 3 different identification methods with you not-counting a previous driver's license.
Which can be a bit of a pain when you are unable to find your birth certificate.
The whole real ID thing has been a real shit show here in MN. We were pretty much the last hold out, and when our government rolled out the new ID there was a solid 8 months with of people who got ones that actually aren't compliant. Right now people are waiting 2-3 months to get their new drivers licenses. Not that big of a deal if all your doing is staying home and driving as you do get a temp license, but you can't fly with it or do a few other things which has made for a real bother.
Follow their rules, and you get to live.

Americans are suspicious of any attempt by the federal government to create a catalog of people
My drivers license has looked like this for years. When i got it renewed when I got my motorcycle endorsement, they asked me if i wanted to make it a "real id," but I don't have a passport so I couldn't.
I didn't know this would somehow be a bad thing to someone????
maybe in both situations my fucking state issued id should work and not cost 35$?
My favourite of all time was some flog at a party giving me this hefty lump of shit about chemicals being introduced into the water to make people more compliant and I was like, "that sounds like a fair stack of shit mate"
"Yeah prove me wrong! Where are your SOURCES?!"
as a person living in a country where my ID has all my numbers and my face, I can atest that
uhm
wait what is supposed to be wrong about this again?
Is "Alternative Media" like "Alternative Medicine"?
