Most recent nVidia driver update has made my display much darker
8 replies, posted
So I just installed the newest driver update from nVidia (version 417.01). After restarting my PC, my display is now considerably darker than before, with some games being
almost impossible to see anything in.
My actual display settings are at their default: 100% brightness, contrast 50% etc., and have not been changed in any way.
Anyone know how I can fix this?
just roll back the driver tbh.
DDU to uninstall then manually install the previous version.

Wow, was this really just a kneejerk reaction to just default to full?

Cheap monitors sometimes don't support the full range of colors, most monitors do however. This only applies to HDMI and DisplayPort however so DVI users shouldn't need to change anything.
It's likely that most people tried to fix their Nvidia drivers dropping more than 10% of the colors by tweaking the settings available to them causing something like you described, however similarly if you enable full range output to limited it will look like a dark mess from what the comments on this video said. It's a good thing that Nvidia is aware of this massive issue though.
Yeah, I just updated to 417.01 and my colors got deeper (like Full output setting) but contrast also got shot (mostly overblown whites).
Rolled back to 416.94 until NVidia sorts this out. I want Full range color without having incredibly bad contrast, thanks.
Nvidia seems to be fucking up a lot of things with their recent drivers. 416.81 and newer have made it so that my graphics card (RTX 2080) can't output to my monitor (BenQ XL2730Z) at native resolution and refresh rate (2160x1440 at 144hz). This is a common issue with RTX 2000 series cards and BenQ monitors for whatever reason and both Nvidia and BenQ are pointing fingers and blaming each other for this problem. Everything works fine if I roll back to 416.34 or older though.
Rolled back the driver as you suggested, and my display is back to normal. Cheers.
Here's hoping nVidia fixes it soon.
I noticed this myself when I installed new drivers some time ago.
I'm a huge color saturation ("Digital vibrance") addict.
The one thing I noticed was that my usual setting of 60% looked really dull after installing the update, I had to bump it to 80% to feel satisfied.
So I knocked the slider down to 0% - my display went fucking grayscale. It's been a while since I last touched the digital vibrance setting before installing the update, but I swear 0% was regular colors before the update.
This was a driver bug? I fixed it by fucking with the monitor settings and it changed the color settings from some random line of numbers and letters to RGB.
Heh. So it isn't just me. Thought I was going nuts or something.
