President Trump on Monday suggested the government start its own television network as he voiced frustration with the way CNN in particular has covered his administration.
"Throughout the world, CNN has a powerful voice portraying the United States in an unfair and false way. Something has to be done, including the possibility of the United States
starting our own Worldwide Network to show the World the way we really are, GREAT!" Trump wrote on Twitter.
Voice of America (VOA) has existed since 1942 and receives funding from Congress. The network's broadcasts are streamed in the U.S. and internationally. Trump's background in
television prior to entering politics led to reports during the 2016 presidential campaign that he would start his own television network if he lost to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Trump denied to The Washington Post in September 2016 that he had discussed launching a media network, calling the speculation a "false rumor." The Financial Times reported in
October 2016 that Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had informally spoken with a media executive about setting up a Trump television network, but the conversations did not
progress in the final weeks of the campaign.
Since taking office, Trump has continued to rail against coverage of his administration, labeling stories he dislikes "fake news." He has in recent months ratcheted up his attacks
against the press, labeling some outlets and reporters "enemies of the people."
Trump has had a contentious relationship with CNN in particular since hitting the campaign trail in 2015. Chants of "CNN sucks" are commonplace at the president's campaign rallies.
The White House earlier this month revoked CNN correspondent Jim Acosta's press credentials following a heated press conference with Trump.
CNN and Acosta sued the administration for violating the reporter's First and Fifth Amendment rights, and a federal judge ordered the White House to restore his credentials.
doesn't Fox news already exist?
What, Fox News isn't blowing you good enough?
Oh boy, Trump TV, paid with American tax dollars. He really is a greedy little baby.
No, they've actually been even vaguely critical of him recently and aren't covering him as much, and even defended Acosta against Trump.
Fox News is too liberal.
Another idea to add to the list of Trump's I'm-not-trying-to-be-a-dictator-but-here's-a-thing-a-dictator-would-do ideas.
Fox is too left-wing and fake news against our glorious leader, we need state run REAL NEWS to give us the facts.
How about we just have no propaganda networks period? That seems like a far more favorable outcome.
As the article notes, there is already a US government-run state media outlet called Voice of America. The problem is that VOA's purpose is to counter foreign propaganda by providing real news, and as such they're actually a shining example of American journalism and they frequently tear into the US government and dismantle the President's bullshit; example from their article on the inauguration crowd size debacle

What he wants is an America equivalent of Russia Today.
Considering the amount of Fox goons who've gotten into the government under Trump's rule, this'll probably be a move to "officialize" Fox News to give it protections that aren't afforded to real news channels, as well as somehow make it seem more legitimate by making it a government entity.
Basically the exact opposite of what ought to be happening (a.k.a. stamping Fox News off the face of the earth and ousting each of their goons from office).
It's beginning to still looks a lot like fascism!
maybe stop doing shit that makes us look bad then ya fuckin putz
As the ol' smurfster mentioned there is a government-funded news networks in the States, and a lot of Commonwealth countries have their own networks as well. The BBC, CBC, ABC, etc. Government-funded news in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing, it's just that nobody with a brain will trust this awful administration to run something like that properly.
I would not oppose an apolitical government-run news service. I mean we do already have VOA, expanding that into television (or better yet, web) would be entirely appropriate. And non-profit educational/informational television is a known working formula, as seen with PBS. There's been department-specific ones, even, like NASA TV, and low-commentary channels like C-SPAN. Like, this is an idea that could work, makes sense, and if done properly would be a clear public good.
However, Trump clearly wants more "America Today", or maybe "Pravda", rather than VOA. To which I say: go fuck yourself with a rake. Sideways.
um... nobody tell him the state department already has one K.
But it's not government run. If anything, funny enough, it's almost the opposite
Make it, and put all of Obamas speeches on repeat 24/7, with 0 Trump exposure.
Didn't this same thing come up right after he got elected?
