I have a hard drive thats been sitting unused with a bunch of data on it. Went to go pull some of it the other day and random files are unreadable. File size and everything is fine. No rhyme or reason to which files are inaccessible. No problem browsing folders or anything I just can't move or open some files. Checkdisk says theres no problems and its not fragmented (shot in the dark). Drive itself is making no weird noises or anything and starts right up. Sometimes it says the file or source cannot be read and sometimes I get a cyclic redundancy error. What do?
Is it external or internal drive? Any errors in smart stats? Have you tried different usb/sata cable?
Technically a internal drive but I use the guts of a old enclosure to access it. I have used it on other drives with no issue
If you can plug it into a motherboards data port you'll probably be better off.
If you're serious you can use a tool called HDDsuperclone.
You will need to have another drive with enough space for a full disk image and it can take a long time to complete in some cases.
If that doesn't work then go to a proper data recovery firm.
