Thoses 2 pieces of graphic design are very neat, hopefuly it'll be something with a strong visual identity
Space New Vegas?
Honestly one of the things that put me off Pillars of Eternity was the medieval fantasy setting. I much prefer sci-fi RPGs so I'm hoping this is good.
Though this probably won't benefit much from the Microsoft buy out, considering how recent that was.
So we're potentially looking at a Victorian-esque sci-fi rpg? I'm ok with this.
cautious optimism at peak levels
Oh great so Starfield is going to have its own New Vegas too?
The fact we'll never get another Obsidian fallout really hurts and I'll never get over it. It sounds sad, since whatever game they can push out will likely be good, it's just the Fallout IP is one of the most special for me and they clearly love it as much as the rest of us.
A space RPG with old-timey visual design? Sign me up.
And that doesn't necessary make them bad
I'd hesitate to say they're anywhere near as good however.
I don't think modern Obsidian would even want to do Fallout again.
If finding great success with their own original IPs wasn't enough of a detractor, now them being an MS owned studio basically gives them free reign to make whatever they want.
I say good on them, honestly. Yeah, I would love another Obsidian made Fallout after the travesties that were 4 and 76, but in the same vein, I would love for Obsidian to continue being known as "that dev that makes good RPGs" instead of "the dev that made New Vegas."
Also, Avellone is basically doing for hire work now. Maybe Bethesda will take a hint and have him onboard to help write the next Fallout game, while also taking the hint that a voiced protag with limited dialog options was a bad idea, as was removing skills and neutering SPECIAL. A man can dream.

Reminder that this will be a MS exclusive - so expect it to be XB1 and PC (UWP)
John Gonzalez was the lead writer on New Vegas. Avellone did character writing, specifically Veronica and Arcade Gannon, and was the lead on Lonesome Road, and that introduced the Tunnelers and their dumb bullshit.
It's being published by Take Two in a deal that was presumably agreed long before the MS buyout so maybe not
Obsidian's RPGs are always top notch. Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 are really good if you haven't given them a go yet
He was also the lead on Old World Blues, which was pretty damn enjoyable.
And he has written entire games before. He was a main writer on Fallout 2 as well as director, and there was also KOTOR 2.
Really though, I just want someone else doing the writing instead of Emil. Anybody.
I just bothers me that every time the idea of a new Obsidian developed Fallout game gets brought up people immediately yell "They better get Avellone back!" and no one even mentions the guy who wrote the majority of the game's plot.
Also Avellone wrote the (now non-canon) Fallout Bible, which always bothered me because people cite it when it's filled with errors. It was just a series of blog posts with a tongue in cheek name and people latched on to it like it was the word of god (by a guy who wasn't even involved with the first game nor the lead on the second).
I'm a little doubtful and worried, since there was that big drama around Obsidian not paying much their workers.
And also the fact that a lot of people, who worked on F:NV, aren't in the team anymore.
Time will tell.
Sawyer is still with Obsedian right? I saw a Ted talk he did not too long ago about branching narratives and that's what I enjoyed an New Vegas, if John and Sawyer are working on this, then I definitely might pick it up.
Chris is working on Dying Light 2 and you can really see his style of "grim dark future" in the small example he showed of the story in that, not saying I don't appreciate it, but the Tunnelers being his answer to civilization becoming too advanced again still leaves a bad taste in my mouth
Josh Sawyer and Tim Cain still work at Obsidian. John Gonzalez does not.
Ah, that's really sad. Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain, Feargus urguhart and Boyarsky are good but John Gonzalez has a special spot in my heart because he wrote the survivalist story in Fallout New Vegas:
Honest Hearts. A really boring DLC otherwise, mind you.
If I'm not mistaken Tim Caine and Boyarsky were also part of the development team for Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines, which was great.
It's a stretch but I'd love to see something from them in the vein of a first person RPG again, I want to get into their newer games so bad but I just can't deal with isometric RPGs.
This feels more Victorian to me tbh.
Boyarsky is not solely, but majorly responsible for Fallout's visual style. He has a very powerful visual language.
