He spent the next year in immigration custody, fighting deportation. In August, he launched a hunger strike that nearly killed him. In October, his jailers in Tacoma, Wash., found a handmade rope under his bed and briefly placed him on suicide watch, according to federal documents reviewed by The Washington Post.
On Nov. 15, he tried to hang himself and was placed on life support.
“Amar’s death is an example of the lengths that ICE will go to keep people in detention,” said Maru Mora Villalpando, a community organizer with NWDC Resistance, an organization that had tried to help Amar. “They could have released him and they decided not to. He kept telling us, ‘I’d rather die here than be deported.’ They cannot say they didn’t know, or they didn’t see it coming.”
As somebody who has made multiple suicide attempts in the past, I can't imagine how much worse these circumstances made his mental health.
It's fucking sad how they can get away with this.
ICE is inhumane. Theres no two ways about it. This is the Japanese Internment Camp of our generation. Decades from now, this is going to be the story of horrendous abuse that people wonder how any citizen of good moral standing could just, tolerate.
"How could we have let this happen?" People will ask as we pay out families affected by this in 30 years.

But guys ! They're ILLEGAL immigrants, so they deserve to be treated like garbage to the point of commiting suicide. They should be expecting it when crossing our borders. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

my folks believe it. the sad thing is they were once fairly reasonable. but they've been watching Fox news since its founding and have completely bought into the madness perpetuated by the right wing in this country. they came from a communist nation and they reacted to their upbringing by completely embracing neofascism. it is really depressing. they are immigrants themselves. they claim to be Christian. but they're full of hatred. I think the tinder and fuel was always in them, but I really believe that Fox took a blowtorch to it. they don't really watch it anymore but the damage is done. they're totally entrenched, not only in the pro-Trump camp, but in the far right camp. it makes me very sad
