https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/29/japan-to-get-first-aircraft-carrier-since-second-world-war-amid-china-concerns Japan is to acquire at least one aircraft carrier for the first time since the second world war, as it attempts to counter Chinese maritime expansion in the Pacific ocean. The government will upgrade its two existing Izumo-class helicopter carriers so they can transport and launch fighter jets, according to media reports. The plans are expected to be included in new defence guidelines due to be released next month.
Of course China is concerned, haven't they gotten their asses whooped by Japan before?
I think you misread it, Japan is the one worried about Chinese expansion, so they're beefing their boat up
Yep my bad. I just woke up. Sorry.
To be fair, it wasn't so much ass-whooped as genocided to fuck. It doesn't justify modern attitudes, but it is something to take into consideration.
I Ass whooping seems shallow, like I'm taking the piss outta what happened to the Chinese, cause you're right it was genocidal, which in it's own way is an extreme ass whooping, it just was an ass whooping that didn't do any good, and a whole lot of bad. I do wonder though, would it play out the same in today's world? I find it amazing that little Japan could give big ol China such problems at one time. And man sorry @Orkel I didn't mean to muck up your thread with my first post, misreading it and shit.
seems pretty defensive when your neighbor is buzzing your towers with aircraft.

The government will upgrade its two existing Izumo-class helicopter carriers so they can transport and launch fighter jets, according to media reports. Funny thing is that one of those two ships is named Kaga, which It's ww2 counterpart had taken part during the china-japan war in the 30s (Also known as one of the carriers sunk in the Battle of Midway).
To be honest these are practically aircraft carriers already. I recall seeing somewhere that these were pretty much built entirely so they could be retrofitted into full carriers should the need arise.
watch as the chicom goes "TOLD YOU THE DANG JAPS ARE COMIN FOR NANKIN AGAIN" on their self-fulfilling prophecy
China also has nuclear weapons too now, don't forget.
Japan has allies. China wouldn't want to fight a multi-front war with Japan,US,NATO, and the various other SEA countries that don't like China.
The article states "Previous Japanese governments have ruled out acquiring aircraft carriers, adhering to the postwar consensus that the vessels’ capabilities could be interpreted as offensive, in a possible violation of the country’s “pacifist” constitution". This goes back to WW2 and the US Occupation of the island. After the war, the US Military and Goverment set a special set of rules and constitutional changes towards the japanese (such as demoting the Emperor from someone holy to a more "western" style of ruler). One of most know constitutional moves was prohibing Japan from assembling an army. After some years, the Japanese goverment allowed funding a self defensive army without the ability or powers to expand their influence overseas (I think this mean they cannot buy "offensive" weapons or vehicles). If you look at the original Godzilla/Gojira movie, you can see the Japanese Army always being on the defensive all the time, because they still hold the value of the defensive-style army very tight.
Was not aware of that actually. That's lack of knowledge on my part. But cool to know.
I think they have the Imperial Japanese in Battlefield. About the carrier, I guess they will use it as a deterrent and assert dominance in the water. If they could hold US Aircraft with their own ones, they might have a superb deterrent against any type of agression
Just saying but there's a misconception that China was "losing" against Japan until the US stepped in, the Republic of China (nationalist China) fought Japan into a standstill before any substantial amount of Allied aid came in, sure the ROC could not have "won" as in occupy Japan itself, but the war was basically a stalemate and in essence Japan's Ostfront except without the reverse steamroll into their home territory by the ROC. Also the relations between China (ROC/PRC) after the war are also complicated, the ROC government had a policy of "forgiveness" towards the Japanese and treated the POWs well, which changed Japanese sentiment towards China (ROC). Then there's the PRC (chinese communists) who loudly and proudly claims they 'fought' the Japanese, and yet even then Lmao thanked Japan for invading China to allow them to come into power (yeah just give that a thought) and officially there wasn't much promoted negativity towards Japan during the Cold War years, but now they're bringing it up every single chance they get because what better way to hide the CCP's entire history of sinning against China than 'uniting' everyone towards an external enemy. tl:dr Japan isn't a threat to either Chinas as a whole anymore, but the PRC makes them an enemy because it's convenient distraction to hide their own problems
Japan also reactivated their Marine Corps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=913tBHGJ888 Abe is beefing up, and that's a good thing.
It's not really an issue of IF Japan will need a stronger military presence, but when. The sooner they start building up, the better, I think.
Will be interesting to see how they convert the Izumo-class DDHs to carry F-35Bs, the single deck elevator is designed for SH-60s and unless they only launch aircraft vertically they'll have to refit the ship to extend the bow

I mean, if I lived next to China I'd probably want some more firepower too.
Maybe it would be, if it were anyone besides Abe.
that sick stunt ramp tho
Abe may be nationalist in many respects, but he isn't looking to be imperialistic at all as far as anyone knows, and as far as logic would dictate. However, Japan doens't have a lot of allies in it's immediate vicinity, and relies too heavily on foreign powers to protect it. Beefing up their military in light of serious political changes in the region is only a smart thing to do, even if it's Abe doing it.
That’s a really small take off ramp. Being able to only launch 1 plane at a time just puts this as useless tbh.
The Japanese have +50% resistance to radiation since Hiroshima so it's okay.
