(its the eastwind device,)
thank goodness for earthquake codes for buildings
I didn't realize Alaska got earthquakes. Those images of the road are insane.
Yeah, it's pretty impressive that you can have buildings wobble around like that and not just crumble.
Alaska gets a lot of quakes. It's the most seismically active state in the country, and one of the most active regions in the world.
Since 1900, Alaska has had an average of:
One "great" earthquake (magnitude 8 or larger) earthquake every 13 years
One magnitude 7 to 8 earthquake every year
Six magnitude 6 to 7 earthquakes per year
Forty five magnitude 5 to 6 earthquakes per year
Three hundred twenty magnitude 4 to 5 earthquakes per year
An average of a 1,000 earthquakes are located in Alaska each month

Alaska's on the upper edge of the Ring of Fire so yeah, the southern part does at least.
I live right in anchorage. This was a scary one. The worst one I've ever felt. Scared the crap out of me. There is so much damage around, luckly my house is made to be earthquake proof so no damage here.
this shit woke me up at 8:30 this morning, took a minute when it happened to realize that an earthquake was goin on. :v
dude i woke up screaming it scared the shit out of me so badly. I didnt even know what to do, so I hid under my bed Dx
I haven't felt an earthquake aside from a little movement one time beforehand. So that scared the shit out of me. Especially since I woke up just a few minutes before it happened.
Good thing there wasnt a tsunami
It still always surprises me seeing pictures of roads like that that are torn up from an earthquake, but a lot of buildings stay standing and can even escape having any real damage.
Wise engineering is a great asset. Not sure if its the case in Alaska, but in large cities that experience earthquakes and have a lot of tall skyscrapers, buildings are often dampened.

Some extremely tall buildings require damping for the wind alone, like the Taipei 101.

Presumably since those cars were on the road when the road broke like that, people were in them at the time. Fuckin imagine just driving along when suddenly the earth opens up to fuckin eat you.
Natural constipation cure.
I live in Eagle River and only woke up midway through the second one because I got annoyed at the house shaking. I thought it was all wind.
haha lucky. That was honestly the scariest thing I've experienced so far. I thought my house was going to fall on top of us D:
That shit looks so unreal... like a cake falling apart.
Reminds me of pictures of the 1964 earthquake

Practical engineering did a good video on these.
To people in Alaska. Make sure to check your pipes and whatnot for any occult breaks or leakage. You might not have visible signs of damage but it still might be worth it to check
🤔
