How is this not fully explored yet. Its just a big hole
I hate how our world has become indentured to the whims and fancies of billionaires like Musk and Branson, who can make anything they want to happen, happen, through the sheer volume of money they can toss around at will. And the worst part is they've convinced the rest of us that that's a good thing.
What the fuck are you talking about?
Hey rich cunts doing things that isn't actively fucking up our economies and environment is a-okay in my book.
The world shouldn't need obscenely rich people to do good things in order for those good things to happen. I'm glad that Musk is developing electric vehicles, Bill Gates is funding malaria research, and Branson wants to explore a big hole for some reason. But the real question is why has society arrived at the stage where, if not for them deciding to throw their money in those directions, we would never have had those developments? Do you not see something deeply wrong with a world where big things happen because one person decides to do it by pumping a fraction of their immense wealth into it?
I mean, isnt this how it basically works when the government does it anyway
No? You can vote for the government, in principle at least. You can't vote for who becomes a billionaire.
You can vote to take their money away
Things are more democratized now than they were at any other period in human history really. Things were getting better in this regard, and likely will return to doing so in the future. People like Boyan Slat who have independently developed very helpful and life saving devices are more empowered now, than at any other point in history I would argue.
Hey, what would you do if you had a ton of money?
So you’d rather everyone pay towards it, even those who don’t make that much money via government? Rich people doing good things is literally what we want happening, so it doesn’t burden people with lower income. Shit cost money to do, this is the best way we can do things without unnecessary suffering.
What the fuck do you want to happen? Bob down the road who makes $60,000/yr to throw his yearly salary into AIDS research?
Wait, where is it possible to do this?
Well we shouldn't need them to, but the world governments sure as hell aren't doing these things. We shouldn't sit around and wait for the government to do things they aren't interested in at all. The Space Race was a way to beat the Russians, exploring deep holes or sending people the bottom of the ocean costs money and they'd rather spend that money on bombs and walls. There's a lot of rich shitheads we could be going after who add nothing good to the world and are only interesting in treating the Forbes Richest Billionaires list as a scoreboard. There's also a lot of rich people who want to do cool and beneficial shit with their money. If those people have the resources to act now should they wait for the government to do it? Or should they just do it? It's an imperfect world, run by imperfect people, following an imperfect system. Idealistically we would all be working together and helping each other and have a galactic federation and all that Utopian bullshit but we don't. That doesn't exist, and working towards that goal doesn't exist across the world scale because our politicians are just as self interested as the rich fucks who horde the cash. If some imperfect eccentric rich person wants to spend their money on something that might inspire everyone or find some cool shit in a hole, or put a man on Mars, why shouldn't they do it? I can't think of a better thing for them to do with their money given the system were in right now. It's sort of like that quote “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” except it's more like "The only thing necessary for triumph of mediocrity is for capable people to do nothing." If these people who -through an imperfect system- amassed great wealth want to spend it on things that might be good for society, isn't that better than nothing? Elon Musk started SpaceX because he had just made a ton of money off Paypal and wanted something to do, and found out NASA had no plans to go to Mars. His first idea was to buy a rocket from Russia and put a small greenhouse and camera on Mars so people could see life on Mars and that might inspire them to petition the government to do something about it. After the government of Russia denied his attempt to buy rockets, he decided he could just do it himself. As long as our world is imperfect and governments unwilling, we should be encouraging the private citizens to stand up. The ability to say "Fuck it, i'll do it myself." is the core of freedom.
Virgin Billionaire Wants to Explore Giant Hole oh hey someone summarized
Good lord can we talk about the actual thing the article is about?? Crikey. I know they speculate it was once a cave, but I always wonder how this thing was originally formed. It's such a perfect circle... it's so bizarre. They should send down a series of scanners like they use for shipwreck mapping and just 3d map the entire thing, that'd be really neat to see.
Big fat fucking asteroid came by, maybe.
Where the hell did I say I'm against them doing it? I'm bemoaning the fact that people have accepted that this is how things should be, rather than work on actual long-term solutions to all the various problems we face e.g. better funding for research, developing new technologies etc. Since when did so many people on Facepunch suddenly become okay with bestowing so much power on someone based on how wealthy they are?
Because Branson has a history of philanthropy and generally not taking himself terribly seriously. If you can't tell the difference between him and kochs or trump maybe you should do some research.
this is in no way related to what I'm saying at all
I get where headhumpy is coming from. Hyper-rich people wield a lot of influence and power but they're not elected(except by shareholders) or held to the same standards are government officials Back the big hole, what is the point on sending a manned mission into there? They should send a remote controlled submersible since you can pack way more sensors in there and don't need life-support equipment .
WHY THE FUCK ARE BILLIONAIRES SPENDING MONEY THE WAY THEY WANT TO?
Hookers and cocaine.
This is false. There's also universities and other research institutes working on new developments, and those are typically sponsored by the government.
Yes you are right. Thus, the solution to fixing that is we should all get mad at the 1% while we bury our heads in personal pursuits that contribute little to nothing to humanity at large. How dare these rich people try to do good. The concept of rich shouldn't even exist in the first place if not for the imperfect world we live in with massively conflicting interests.
Everyone complaining about him spending money to explore it even though he runs Oceans Unite which aims to protect the ocean. What more do ya want
the last time the world wasn't like this we were picking berries
I bet you're fun at parties.
Throughout all of human history, progress has often been made by great men. People with the drive, willpower, vision and means to make their dreams reality. The world has always been identured by the whims of these kind of men. Billionaires are just a modern form they can take. Regardless of your opinion on Musk or Branson as people, they are using their massive wealth for the improvement of mankind rather than pocketing it for personal gain like most greedy, short-sighted rich men. We live in a society Most large sinkholes tend to be circular as seen in the picture. I think it's the result of the initial collapse reaction triggering a domino effect in a radius around itself that causes the final hole to be round. Also asteroids tend to leave craters, not holes.
