Do they serve any purpose other than "memeing"?
Do you think there are ways they can be used constructively? Have you seen them used constructively?
Here is one remark from me:
I think that they can, in theory, be used to convey emotion and nuance that is lost in the impersonal communications of online text. Our communications in real life aren't just the words we say, our body language and tone of voice also play a important part in conveying meaning.
They should be used sparingly. I miss the :downs: emoji.
I use emjois strictly in an ironic manner
I still call them emotes. They are all the same.
I think they're great. They can communicate ideas that are difficult or cumbersome to explain in words. They're also really just standardized versions of the text emoticons we've all been using since the 2000s

Real talk though I don't mind them, but at this point there are so many of them they're getting less and less convenient to use, for example there's 5 fucking train emojis, why?
Also protip, Winkey + . opens up an emoji picker in most text fields on Windows 10
There is only three genuine use of emoji:
1: POGCHAMP MEME FEELSGOODMAN CLAP REACTION PIC
2: 💖💖😘😘💋💋
3: Deficiency in written language.
Other than that everything else just comes as disingenuous. Body language doesn't matter much when you can carefully construct your words. Subtext will have to do in this environment.
🙌
i think their core intention of injecting emotion in messages where it might otherwise be hard to convey tone is very useful, but I also think they’ve been largely over saturated and instead become a substitute for normal typing.
I only use smiley ones. I don't know why I'd need to use an emoji of a sassy woman, or of a banana.
I think people aren't likely to do that.
😱😱😱 I can't believe this! [and without further thought, slams that POST REPLY button]
this shitty witty reply still took me 2 iterations
Bring back the gun emoji
I think it's fine as long as it's used beyond annoyance like this 😂😂😂😂😂😂
My favorite one is 👌, it's pretty versatile
Think it's okay, I use some emoji for expressing myself when has no reach to reaction images or if I talking with person who dont understand them
btw my favorites is 🤥☹🤔❤💞💗💖💦⚠
I'm pretty sure animated background are allowed.
I hate the word emojis. I just call the emoticons. I don't mind their existence though.
They can help with language barriers and IQ barrier they can help the world be friends
I use them strictly so people know how I say things. There are so many things that could be confusing if you don't know how it's being said.
I use them strictly to confuse people regarding my intentions. That are so many things that could be clarified by using words yet I just pick some retarded bird face emoji to represent all of my thoughts on some subjects.
They are most likely going to be the future.
Just focusing on English for the moment: the English language has developed over more than a thousand years, and in that time, some letters were added to the English alphabet while others were taken away. But since typewriters, and more recently computers, the English alphabet has been formalised on virtually every computing device in the English-speaking world; the same 26 letters are effectively set in stone in keyboards, Unicode etc. Yeah there are other letters such as é, as in résumé, but most English speaking people corrupt that by writing it as ‘resume’. Point is, our English alphabet is probably the last English alphabet that will ever be used.
Emoji/emoticon on the other hand is much more flexible than English; new emojis are being made all of the time. They are relatively efficient in conveying information, and are so easy to understand that their use can break down barriers in communication between eg an English speaker and a Deutsch speaker. Also helps with young children too.
...
However I despise using emoji because I feel it can be insulting. Eg sending a message to someone, and rather than receiving a well-thought reply, it might just be a dumb face.
I used to hate emojis until I realized everyone else is using them, in some conversations you end up coming off as either cold or weird if you don't speak the same way as the other party
I do think it's pretty fucked up that the swimming emoji 🏊♂️ looks so much like the drowning emoji 🏊🏿♂️ but whatever
I like emoticons, but a lot of the "emoji" are pretty trashy looking. A few of them like, :B1: from steam and the  emoji are pretty top tier though.
I think the issue is a lot of companies make them pretty generic instead of exagerrated "reaction faces" which make them unappealing for me to use.
Emoji placement can change how a person reads it quite a lot, I like their purpose. Heirogylphs existed, language evolves. Adapt or die.
Sometimes if I have nothing to say I'll just drop an emote in a half-trolly fashion. Like if my friends are talking about drugs I'll just drop a 🚓 without saying anything.
i like kaomojis more than emojis, theyre a hell of a lot more expressive imo
There are some emotions and feelings that don't translate well into English and in this case I'd find them useful but there are no emotes that represent things like Saudade so I ultimately find them pointless.
They're uuuuber useful for if you're trying to keep messages terse and you don't want to lose ~all~ of the nuance of speaking face to face.
