Well... Iron ores like bog iron (that looks like the one mined in Rust) used to be building materials as well and using them as stone would have a point. Could it be, that upgrading to stone, making furnaces and upkeeping bases could consume ore as well as stone? I usually have too much of that and no use for it. Something to do with all those surplus metals, usually turned into frags to lay around and do nothing, would be nice.
It can also be used in process of production of sulpharic acid nad you won't make any good explosives without H2SO4. Maybe instead of simply making GP we could get some kind of a lab table, that would cook suplhur ore into gunpowder, using charcoal, water and ore? Taht would make more point than black powder without KNO3.
There was that bleach thing as well and in guerilla warfare it's used for production of strong oxydiser, using potassium hydrooxide (from wood ash or - in case of Rust - charcoal, as dumb it seems) - it goes like this:
NaClO-heat->NaClO3+NaCl
NaClO3+HOH->KClO3(sediment)+KOH
Don't do that at home or at least remember, that I do not take responsibility for dismemberd bodies and structural damage of infrastructure, if you do.
Mixing this thing with suplphur would get us cartridge primers and with low grade fuel -an actual explosive for our everyday, Rusty needs of busting doors and removing neighbours.
Making KNO3 should simply take some compost (like all that salty survivor meat) and rocks. And should take a lot of time, like leaving it for a day.
Those rusty guns seem to be black poder weapons and they should jam after a few shots, this would nerf everything betten than a revolver... And good, maybe those could be made cheaper for this - situation where an AK cost twice as much as a wall is weird.
